I found four chicks dead and one chick missing when I carried my umbrella to the chick pen yesterday. The old hens found the missing chick this morning. He/she was half consumed by the hens by the time I caught on to the fact that they had found her/him. Yes, folks, the evidence is conclusive. Chickens are not only omnivores, they are cannibals.
I still don't know what happened. The fence was still intact. I did not find any animal tracks in the pen. Simple exposure? It was a yucky, mucky night with temperatures far lower than what the chicks were used to.
That puts me down to 7 of the original 20. 35% survival rate. Not feeling like it is a rating to crow about. Pun intended. . .
Yesterday was intense. . . Both the chicks and hens were highly agitated from the nights events. Clean up was/is a bear. Today I feel like a chick-a-cidal maniac. Feeling lower than my chick nurture rating.

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...
No suggestions, only support.
Sigh. . .
Thanks guys. I been out, trying to get things more comfy for them, but I seem to be a one-woman Shriner Circus gridlock today. Beep beep. . .
Maybe time to built a real coop?
hugs,

I understand the poop. My old house was out in the country before they built around it. There was a large wetland area and the geese would have babies then come to our yards because all of us neighbors had large gardens they like to go into and feed. I was amazed how they could get in there. They would hop up on our wrap around porch and poop all over it. The momma's would tap on the door with their beak. I can only think the last owner fed them from her porch. What a mess.
Can't I do anything the easy way?
We had chickens on the farm and it was nice to have fresh eggs, but whole they can be crazy. Chickens will peck at each other, and should they draw blood, they will not stop pecking that bird. Sometimes Blukote on the wound will help stop the pecking and help the chicken recover.
Pecking can be caused by being to crowded, not enough protein in the food, being bored, to many treats. Maybe try dividing them into smaller groups?
I hope the others make it (hugs)
Maybe 2 chickens per tractor, and move them daily?
You don't want the chickens to get drenched now, OR baked in the Texas sun later...
I have to use bahia hay for my dog houses in winter-and I bring my dogs in when it hits 40 f or less.
Anyway, though, you did construction, so you just needed the concept.
