Avoidance of Certain Locations

I am wondering what people's experiences with this are, in regards to PTSD. I had a really severe trauma several months ago. Since then, being in the area it occurred had bothered me quite a bit, but I sort of ignored (though I didn't have to go there too often). But these past couple weeks, going back through that area, I have been UTTERLY overwhelmed with unbearably painful emotion and horror. I have decided that, at least for now, I need to really avoid that area. It is Simply too much. If I'm trying to socialize, I dissociate and feel like...well, not like socializing. Rather like standing in a corner and staring with wide, horrified eyes. The vacuum of shock and pain is that great. I know people can get over this through exposure-desensitizing and building new positive memories. However, I wonder if, in some cases, at times avoidance is the best thing at least for a time (even if it is a long time), if the trauma was incredibly severe and the reaction is just bringing back too much. I'm also a little curious about the fact that it had been bearable for a while and now I have let it all surface sufficiently to be overwhelmingly horrified when back there. Hearing others' experiences with this and insights gained would be much appreciated. :)

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

First, I hope everyone is doing well, and continuing to fight that good fight! Keep up the great work on yourselves; I'm rooting for all of you!So, I started doing therapy at the beginning of the year, when I was in my most depressed state, but with my therapist, I made big changes and steps in the right direction. But, over a month ago, she couldn't take my insurance anymore, and I had to stop...
I was re-traumatized about a year and a half ago while in my own small community, it occurred less than 10 minutes from my home. At first even going outside alone was freaky. Then I could go out but avoided the whole part of the community where the murders occurred. Now I'm down to just not wanting to go to the specific business where this happened.. I can be a block away and feel just fine. I did a lot of CBT work on reconceptualizing so that I could view my community as safe again. Can't imagine ever being comfortable going back in that specific place again, but that is no big issue in terms of being able to pursue normal activity again.
By the way, after the event my community did lots of memorial events right at the site, but the people who went were those shook up by just hearing this happened in their town. For someone who was there, surrounded by lifeless bodies of friends, I have no need to ever return to the site. I pay my respect to the dead w/ every flashback I have.
It is not just time that helps us heal but our own inner work at reconceptualizing and being in the present.
The parts I feel the need to face proactively are the ones that follow me wherever I go in the form of nightmares, anxieties, irrational reactions, etc. If it is nothing more than identified discomfort in circumstances I can easily avoid, color me gone. I have more important things to worry about.
