In my live support groups, I have witnessed again and again where folks came to play games, mock, troll for prospects, recruit for causes, etc., etc., through the human repertoire of sick behavior. They came to act out sick impulses and stayed to heal. On many levels, I can even number myself among those sickies... I arrived at many a support group meeting with far more cynicism than open-mindedness...
It really is a profound experience to witness. It is even more profound to experience it within my own skin. Healing is a profound process.
So far, in my own personal experience with on-line support groups, I have yet to witness this with the on-line groups. I am not all the way sure it is even possible. So far, the number one obstacle I have noted is what I call, "The Troll Patrols." Those self-appointed vigilantes of the internet... Censorship on high... Owners of All Truth...
I also wonder about the absence of physical contact as an obstacle. We have no body language to read here. Typeface cannot really convey an AHA moment or a triggered reaction. Face to face, it is much easier to read reactions. Still hard, but easier than in typed dialogue.
Then there are the revolving avatars. Live support groups are anonymous, but we get to see one another to confirm physical identity. In some ways, I wonder if being able to change avatars allows for more emotional growth, but... Still chewing...
Just a wondering wander... Thoughts??? Opines???

Here is my new brother, copper :) He's so tiny! Moo and Tuck were ok with him on first meeting. Rocket due to his severe aggression will never meet Cooper.

i have seen a lot in my years as a community leader. I have seen blatent attacks on members... i have seen not so blatent attacks and i've seen members who for one reason or another become good friends and then have a falling out and then inevitably drama commences. The comment " in adding this comment I do promise to be nice" is there for a reason.... the rules that DS operates under are there for a reason.
One of the biggest aggravations for me personally is not what happens on the board, it's the drama that is caused off the board thru hugs and pm's which inevitably will end up on the boards. I've seen it cause almost a dividing line in groups as far as members. I've seen it shut down groups that were really great in supporting to becoming a group that people just quit posting which is really sad to me cause in the end, we're all basically here for the same reason; to get support, understanding.
i think it is important to remember that we're all here for one reason or another just trying to survive. Not everyone is going to get along. The best advice i can give is when there is strife on the board between two members or more, let it stay between those members. Bringing it to the board involves everyone and for some, seeing that type of strife on the board is not good and can trigger someone else who is already having a hard time.
As well there is the report abuse form at the bottom of the page...No one here has to tolerate abuse... We are here to help one another and for the most part I believe that's what we do
May we continue learning how to find healing strength in our diversity.
Healing hopes for all. No exceptions.
