This week I've really been here a lot asking for support not to give in to my fight or flight response due to stress at work. I had a conflict with my boss on Monday, and managed to keep my cool through it with a LOT of support from here. Then Tuesday a student went off in the hall way on me after midterm grades were posted, and somehow I kept my cool there, too.
Both cases of keeping my cool mean not only keeping my temper, but also keeping from quitting. Important, because in 30 minutes I got in for my 5 year tenure review interview in front of the bosses at my college. I could really have blown that under the stress of this week.
But today an older student brought that young student who went off in the hall way to me and got him to listen to me and make up.
It was amazing.
While that was going on in my classroom just the 3 of us, my boss that I had a conflict with on Monday stuck her head in the door and wished me lots of luck in tonight's tenure interview. And she meant it, very positively.
It was amazing.
Look, I don't know if I'm going to do any good at this tenure interview I'm about to go into. I've done a good job these last 5 years teaching at this community college, but I have PTSD, and I'm not perfect. I'm just thankful to go in there without being in fight or flight mode from the stress of this week, thanks to your support.

It was a good exercise. There are minuses, certainly. I teach too many classes and make too little money here in Appalachia's low income market, for one.
But overall, I came away with more pluses than minuses, so that was a good chance for reflection and gratitude about what I've done with the last few years, whatever happens next.
A big plus on my inventory list was DS PTSD and the part it played in my tenure review this past week. In fact, the tenure committee asked me directly about DS PTSD in my tenure interview itself last Thursday night, and they were very favorable about us and what we do here.
After a few education classes it is stressed that it is part of certification in my state. There will always be teachers that have the learned heart to see the need in a child but for those that missed that class of pain in life, a working knowledge of it is added to the courses.
