I keep having nightmares about things that happened to me a while ago when I was a little kid. I was around one of my mom's ex's and he abused me physically, mentally, emotionally, and sexually from when I was 4 until I was 8. I feel fine most days and am trying to learn to live with that being a part of my past.
But, sometimes I have nightmares about the things that happened to me. Like I'm re-living my memories and those specific events. It seems so real. It's been happening more and more for some reason.
I wake up with my heart racing and sweat all over my body. I can't really do anything about it. I've tried relaxing before I sleep and tried thinking of something nice before I sleep. I've slept in the cold and slept in the heat. Nothing changes it. I've tried eating different less sugary foods.
Nothing really works and these nightmares are getting longer and worse. So, does anyone do anything to calm themselves down that might help.

I have to do deep breathing when I wake up at night because I think I get so scared I hold my breath. That helps calm me down and give me strength to relax. I also wish there was something that would just make these go away forever and I don't know what to do about them either. Big hugs to you----please take care.
I have found that when I write down the images, words, pictures, senses, smells, sounds, and names, and look at the written entry later, I am able to piece together the puzzle.
To help me with the heart racing and sweat wake-up call, I use a positive image, towel, and massage to relax the tensed muscles.
Of course, it takes more than once to get the puzzle to fit, and I have found myself laughing with a trusted listener over the process.
It takes patience, trial and error, and time to help your mind and body heal from the events, memories, and to make them positive for your well-being. It doesn't change what happened, just how you react to the event.
I try to breathe to calm myself down. The breathing is just all over the place.

They are also good for one's bones and general health too.
I used to take vitamins that had Calcium and Magnesium in it. I should start taking them again for my arthritis too.
most of the people i know that have an anxiety disorder take something more mild like 1mg or .5 mg ativan or .25mg clonazpan. they have longer half lifes and take a bit longer to kick in and don't give you that "drunk" feeling.
im actully not rx'ed xanax for anxiety i'm rx'ed them for tremors but it dose take my anxiety away and allowm me to sleep when i wake up from a nightmare and i'm jumpy and can't get back to sleep
milder things that others have mentions are good suggestions, tylenol pm is just an antihistimine with tylenol in it so it makes you drowsey enough to fall asleep. meletonin is another good one.
I'd be careful taking Tylenol PM or ANY pain pills that are PM because then, when you do have pain, they won't as readily. The Melatonin is natural and I get mine at Wal-Mart.
My sister is still having nightmares about our dad as he was extremely abusive. I don't anymore, but have had them about my ex. The worst was just realizing in the dream that I was still married to him. What a relief to wake up and realize it was a nightmare. Then, I just laugh it off and relief.
This is a great group here and have taught me a LOT!
