PS. When I said that the scholars 'don't know exactly' I just meant that they're not 100%...but it seems that they're on the right way and that it's fairly certain now that it's a combination of a sensitive character and dtrauma (difficult circumstances/dysfunctional family).

I have not met anyone who has BPD who has not grown in either a very invalidating enironment or was abused.

An invalidating environment can be not ill intended sometimes.

Controlling parents or parents who don't let their children feel or deal with their emotions can do it.
Narcissistic parents too.

The borderline referred to in BPD is the borderline between sanity and psychosis (schizophrenia). Any word used to label something unpleasant will eventual have a stigma associated with it. The word "retarded" seems the former euphemism falling into the trash heap of the now non-PC. "Emotionally unstable" is a phrase that can refer to a large percentage of the population at some point in their lives, so should be a relatively safe haven for avoiding stigma, and I don't sense any implication of blame in the term. Finally, it is very easy to get confused when BPD can refer either to borderline or to bi-polar disorders. I'm all in favor of changing the designation.

Johnny. Borderline was thought of as bordering between yes, psychosis and neurosis (a nervous disorder such as GAD) not sanity. However, that is out the window now.

I definitely don't agree with the name changes. Saying "emotionally unstable" does put the blame back on us because people won't look at it as we were neglected or abused growing up. They'll just look at it like we're nuts or that it's our own fault. That we make things up in our heads.

I don't think changing the name will lessen the stigma. I think it will be the same.

I read that they aren't changing the name but adding an alternative name which would be "Emotional Regulation Disorder" because it is more correctly descriptive of the disorder....

personaly i think its a terrible idea and i find it highly offensive.
i wouldnt be nearly as open about my illness if i had to say i had emotionaly unstable disorder.
because im not always emotionaly unstable. also it doesnt describe everything that we deal wtih we deal with more than mood instibiulity.
and emotional instablity. we also suffer from bridge bnurning, dissociaion depersonaization etc. the list goes on i dont know them all but i know its alot more than just mood instability. i agree that borderlies have a bad rap thas why i said there no way i ahve that.

oh and the last pdoc who dx'd me with bpd wasnt archaic about it he said that it gets a bad wrap which is sad because really bpds are kind of heros to ahve overcome as much as they have. since most have been so badly abused.

Hi they have it too I was diagnosed 10 yes ago with split personality disorderror now phys want to change name to euphoria because spd is old fashioned soo emotionally unstable personality disorder is for split personality disorder too I wish they wouldn't change name spd is a lot easier to say than the other one
