I do not like it.How many times have guys tell women "You are emotionally unstable!" But they do not really undderstand what that means.

"emotionally unstable personality disorder" seems to me to minimize the seriousness of it, and we'll be trated like just spoil brats.

"Borderline" at least leaves a little mystery.

I'm sorry, but that is my opinion.
But the medical profession has been doing us 'wrong' forever.
Only Marsh L. and a few others has shed some light into it.

Most BPDs were abused as children, now we are the bad guys...

There will be a new name for DSM-5. One of my therapist said it was likely to be something like:
Post-Traumatic Personality Disorder
Emotion Regulation Disorder

I do not want it to be labeled as you mentioned. There's enough stigma around mental illness as it is.

I have been diagnosed (2008) under the ICD-10 (World Health Organisation Guidelines) as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder Borderline type. My psycharist uses both the E.U.P.D and also Borderline Personality Disorder label with me as he said they are both the same condition.

I personally find emotionally unstable personality disorder makes me sound like i am some sort of axe murder and i find it highly offensive when the health care professionals use that term with me. although borderline personality disorder as a name is misleading i would much prefer to be refered to as borderline than emotionally unstable.

I am very emotionally unstable so dont know why I would feel that it is offensive if someone calls me that???

I don't know, the new name seems a bit long and complicated. A few days ago there was a major conference in Berlin with all the best experts on bdp in the world, including M. Linehan. Obviously they are now beginning to consider bdp as a more serious kind of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and that in itself is a good thing for us because it takes into consideration that most of us have been abused in one way or another...

Ps. In Italy they're using the term 'borderline' as synonymous with 'nuts, crazy' so here it'd be a good thing if the name was changed...they'll say 'sei borderline' instead of 'you're nuts'...

People don't even know what BPD is, what's the point in changing the name to another thing that people still won't understand. I think the people who decide these things are the ones who are nuts.
I agree with Pokkino, when you hear emotionally unstable...what guy is going to want to take someone like that on? Friggen no one would.

That is graet news siyaya, i have never met anyone with BPD that was not abused or grew up in invalidating environments.

Even the ones who said they didn't looking at their childhoods closely they were, they either had very narcissistc parents or even if the abuse was not obvious it was emotional abuse sometimes covert one.

I have mixed feelings about the change. One it may lessen the stigma or it may do what you all said and everyone will think we are spoiled brats or crazy. Plus the insurance companies here in America may not see it as a curable disorder and there goes any insurance coverage.

I wish they would come up with names that were completely unrelated to what the disorder is about. Like they could call Borderline - Linham disorder.... or call Bipolar - Aslidofi. Totally made up names or whatever... just so long as the name does not directly describe the issue... I think there would be less misuse that way..... Bipolar and Borderline have both become slang for poor behavior and we all know that's not so.....

I personally do not like any of the "new" names. I agree with pokk that the "new name" suggestions. They definitely minimize the symptoms and put the blame back on us. I hate that whoever the deciding group is thinks feels the need to make us sound like spoiled, attention seeking, could stop if we wanted to brats.

Some people say that borderline is a confusing term because it doesn't specify the border between what and what. Thats okay with me because half the time I don't even know what I'm on the border of.

One last thing isn't every mental illness a variation of emotional unstability?

I don't know what doctor decided on that name but maybe they STILL don't understand the disorder and they are not taking into consideration how this disease is treated by other docs and society.

They must know that it has a bad stigma and that "emotionally unstable" only make it worse.

Nicky i see your point because you understand our disorder.

But most people don't, there's articles on net that say what "horrid" people we are.....
And a lot of specially men have been calling their wives "emotionally unstable!" for years....All they need now is to say "i told you!"....

Those docs are not thinking it through.
Bordeline is fine with me, because i am at the border of loosing it most of the time.

But i agree it should have a name totally unrelated to describing anything abou it, in fact maybe even one that people can not misconstruct with that in mind by docs just to validate and protect us.

I rather it be called Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder it makes more sence.

When i was told i had BPD i was so angry cos i didnt understand what the hell all this was but had i been told that i had EUPD i would off found it easier to get my head around even know i would have still been angry.

Pokkino, as you hypothesised, the scholars still don't know exactly what causes BDP or how to define it. However, it now seems that nobody's born BDP and according to the conference in Berlin with all the experts (Linehan etc) massive preventive efforts will be needed in the future...particularly sensitive children who grow up in the wrong circumstances tend to develop BDP and there are various different signs that indicate that a child might be in the risk zone...so now they're saying that social workers etc. should be trained in order to be able to help children who're at risk...a lot of people would never develop BDP if they got help in time..
