NDY..Am so sorry to hear of your TIA..I believe you are making a wise choice in assisted living and yes,,you can have computers in your room.
The home care is ok,,but having worked with them they are really expensive unless you have long term care insurance. With Assisted Living there are CNA's and nurses on call 24/7.

Your picture of bruises are awful,,you poor dear person you must be in pain yet here you are typing away,,,Bless your heart,,,Prayers and good thoughts ,,,L

My goodness - this must have been a very frightening experience. I'm sorry you had to go through this but am glad that you are on the mend at this point.

I think assisted living or living near family who can be there if something like this happens again is a very good idea. I am moving near my brother and sister-in-law because we all feel like close family is very important as we age.

NDY: My advice to you is to thoroughly investigate assisted living. Don't let them 'rush' you into their facility and your disability check. My experience over a year + has been hell; I'm not saying they are ALL like this one, but many people have moved out QUICKLY. Don't let them LIE to you.. I hope it works out for you.

I have had a "First-Alert style" bracelet ( General Electric Guardian Care ) for 3 yrs & have used it ( 9x ) to call for an ambulance... Until my Gastric Bypass Surgery 1-11-11, I had 6 surgeries in 2 yrs.

( I am also in a government program that is funded through a grant that wil fund my assisted care as they already have done for 3 yrs with my caregivers. The hospital wanted me to go right away but I want to CHOOSE where I go & want to break up my belongings prior to going.)

There is a Catholic home that has a chapel right there that I can go to everyday but it is very difficult to get in there & there is a waiting list.. It will take me a couple of months to break-up housekeeping anyways.I don't think I will have a problem qualifying !

It has been the prayers of my Friends who have brought me from a wheelchair to my feet & who will bring me through once again by God's Awesome Grace & Healing Power

Please continue to pray for me... I know the Love of my God & my Friends & Good Neighbors will see me through this next phase of my life...

You dear sweet woman! I hope you feel better soon and get the help you need. And as gene said don't let them "rush"you into just annyplace. Please have someone stay with you until the decision is made as to where you will go. You don't need to go thru any more hell. I know gene has not been happy where he is and I pray for him daily as I will also pray for you dear one. Very very gentle hugs and the best and quickest luck to you in finding a safe and well kept place with kind considerate people to care for you.
Lord Jesus take this wounderful woman under your wing and place an Angel with her for protection untill a wonderful home is found for her. And Lord we ask that you heal her from this condition so that she may go back to her home or the home of a family member and not have to deal with this again. OK ~ This is HOW it is ~ Talked to my case manager this morning... The only thing I can have is a bed in a nursing home with a nightstand & about $30 leftover from my Soc Sec check !! THAT is definitely NOT happening !!

So, I will just not get out of bed in the morning until my care giver shows up & if they can't come here & get me up in the morning - They just won't work here anymore !! So far, my TIAs have only occurred while I am sleeping.

My care givers only work here 6 hrs a day... I am alone for the other 18 hrs. Just leanin on the Lord & you guys again !! Like good old Roy Rogers used to sing, "I'm back in the saddle again ! "

It's amazing how LITTLE assistance these these 'assisted living' facilities give. They give you your meds, cannot give insulin shots, can't touch you, are too stupid to understand you had a stroke; make this clear before you go in. I'm not sure how much you can get in writing. Often aides who give you meds have had brief training & FORGET some. You have to be proactive if you can, If you don't feel comfy with the place, check out another

i know someone that owns an assisted living facility that allows pets. its beautiful there.

another way is to hire a live in home health person, maybe a nursing student if you live near a university or county college? as is much cheaper!

I am praying there will be something for you other than that nursing home. My thoughts are with you.

Gene - "assisted living" is basically meant to provide you with a place whereby you would have someone more readily available should an emergency occur but you're still kind of on your own. It's not like a nursing home which is more managed care with a regular nurse visit to give you your meds and a cna likely helping you with your daily care. Both should give access to activities geared toward the needs of the residents (assisted living folks would be more likely to be mobile than the nursing home folks so they would probably have access to a wider range of activities. At least that is generally the defining point here in NY. Assisted living usually means you're still pretty much able to take care of yourself but might just need a little help here and there rather than 24 hour constant care and the rules are different as to what type of staff they must have on duty at a given time. So really in NDY's case and anyone considering either option, you would have to really decide just how much care you need as to which fits your needs better. But either way, it's likely to cost a lot and leave you with little, which is why so many people live with family.

Side note, my aunt went through a similar thing just this week looking into options for her husband, but she found out if he were to be placed in any sort of care she would lose everything because all the pension money and such that they are getting and living on is in his name and it would be taken to cover his care and since she never worked it would leave her with only $5,000 a year to live on from SSI. So she decided she will just have to keep caring for him at home.

NDY, those are some bruises you have got. You weren't kidding about being in technicolor! Fortunately, bruises heal. Hopefully, no more TIAs or any other issues of the sort for you for a good long time!

I am blessed o have a case manager who really cares about me and the plan is like this : i took my old potty chair out of retirement and placed it beside my bed. Under no circumstances am I permitted to go beyond my bed when i wake up without my care giver by my side. They will be given keys to let themselves into my apartment. They will immediately wake me up or come & get me. This way, should I be incoherent or mildly paralyzed as in this last episode I won't b falling or out of control..

My only Alternative to that is a steel bed in a nursing home with a metal nightstand & no computer... with about 30 bucks left from "their cut" of my Soc Sec check and let me just tell you right now ...
