Over The Fence Community Group
A quote from one of our happy Over The Fence members: "Hi JS- Thank you for the welcome message. Do you remember that show Home Improvement and the neighbor Wilson Wilson Jr. who would meet Tim the Tool Man at the fence, but never showed anything but his eyes? He was so funny. This group reminds me of those encounters... you get the wisdom, humor, and support from your DS...

Back in the Day.. In 1950 (were you even born yet?) when we had one of the largest recorded snow storms ever in our PA history?? I was 6 yrs old living on a farm in the Appalachian Foot Hills. The snow in our yard was SO deep that my 11 yr brother & I made "snow tunnels" throughout yard & actually crawled through them! And our farmhouse was at the top of the hill & our 'yard' ran down over the side of it.
That should give you an idea of how mush SNOW there really was.as this was on an incline! We didn't go to school for well over 2 weeks bec we lived in the Boonies. Even tho plenty of tractors had snow plows, it took that long for the farmers to get to each others houses by plowing the road. The SNOW just kept coming & coming & coming & ...
We HAD a BLAST - A SNOW BOUND WINTER BLAST !!!

As a child I was raised on a farm! (Some of the other foods mentioned were from the "other Picky Eaters" in the Boomers Plus group!)
Suppertime was a race to "get it while you can!" That is, when you were a little girl, in the group of "Brothers" as my mom raised my aunt's sons when she passed away and they were young to older teens, n addition to my older brother. Manners were very lacking in spite of my mother's scoldings!
I also had food allergies that limited some of the foods that I was allowed. Thankfully, I 'out grew' the majority of them. Since I had my gastric bypass surgery they are practically non-existent! I can even have fresh pineapples and anything tomato!
I loved any kind of beets & beans a fore mentioned. Also, my mom would send us out into the meadow with a box or a sack to pick wild greens that were there. We enjoyed purslane, sorrel, lamb's collar, dandelion & all sorts of "wllted salads" made with fresh cured bacon & home made vinegar from our own apples!
.
( Did any body else here have to dip dead chickens in hot boiling water over a burning wood pile to pull their nasty wet feathers out? It wasn't until I had my first child at 29 before I could stand the smell of chicken cooking. And not even then if I was pregnant!
We had a regular 'assembly line'! My dad would chop off their heads; my brother tied them upside down kickin on the clothesline so they would bleed out; then my step brother and I got the privilege with pullin the feathers out; they then would be taken inside to my grandma who would "gut them"; and, my mom would rinse them with water for an ice glaze & into the freezer they went! )
The only thing fresh vegetable I have a problem with is green beans and yellow wax beans. Probably bec I ate so many so long as they practically grew themselves! I rarely eat them even with the mushroom soup & french fried onions on them!
Oh! I almost forgot - I hate most frozen vegetables bec my dad got my Mom the most humongus chest freezer ever! To this day - I can almost taste the ice in those lifeless vegetables. I can usually eat the steamers though. They aren't too evil!

Back in my day...
I remember writing thank you notes for Christmas presents
having the chain of my bike break and a stranger fixing it, he knew me was because I looked like my dad
for a quarter you could get a bag of chips and a soda in a returnable bottle, deposit was a nickle, but they would "trust you" for it
TV stations went off at midnight, except Friday night, The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack was on
we had 2 tv channels NBC and CBS
in the summer we would sleep on Grandma's porch, I always called the swing, we felt very secure with that hook and eye lock on the screen door:]
I remember the first time I heard the "F" word, I was in 4th grade in the bathroom and this "fast" girl was telling us all about "sexing", she scared me to death, I told my mom I wanted to be a nun, we weren't catholic
I had "borrowed" my mother's bright red lipstick from he bathroom. And because this bathroom had a big old-fashioned ledge-style sink so I had to climb up on the sink. While i was applying the lipstick one of my new friends thumped me on the back real hard saying, "Atta Girl!"
Well, at that point the lipstick zipped up from my lips and right up the side of my nose! I had a huge thick, bright red stripe up the side of my nose! And since it was "Hazel Bishop's Indelible Fire Engine-Red Lip Stick that boasted durability _ It had lasting effect!s. Needless to say, my mom found out big - time! And I never wore lipstick again until the middle of 7h grade!
If I remember correctly she felt I had been punished enough wearing the stripe all the rest of the day at school. And, of course, my older brothers never let me live it down either!!
