I plan to go on ORAL boniva for now. I am done with my dental work. If I need dental work again, it will be for a graft WITH a double implant.

I would just go of the med if I ever decide to do this.

I finished 6 surgeries and all but 8 bottom front teeth have root cannals and full caps.

This is due to Sjogrens.
Partly due to MD FAILURES to prescribe Salagen for saliva.

You people all help me a lot.
I get a lot of the pro's and con's from this DS place.

WebMD is a good tool for finding out information as far as the different treatments, side effects, and to get a real understanding of what is happening to us. I use it alot, and am glad because if not for this site I wouldn't know what I do about this condition and a host of other things. SBCGC

I took generic Fosamax for about 6 years as soon as it went generic. Just when I started taking it, I had all my teeth pulled out with no trouble. This year I decided to get dental implants. My dentist took me off Fosamax for 3 months prior to the surgery. I got them but they hurt so bad even after a month I had him take them out. About a month and a half ago I noticed what I thought was a sore spot on my gum and went to the dentist for an adjustment in my lower denture. The nurse noticed that it was white where sore spots on a gum are usually red or pink. Anyway she fixed the denture. If it was a sore spot, it should have healed in 2-3 days. It was still sore after a month. I called my dentist. He was out of town and the lady I talked to referred me to an oral surgeon who works closely with him. I made an appointment with him. He looked at the place on my gum and touched it with an instrument. I about went out of the chair.
He asked me if I took Fosamax for osteoporosis and I said yes. He said (he wrote it down for me) I have Bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of jaw (BRONJ). He gave me a perscription for antibiotics and a mouth rinse and I am to see him in 2 weeks.
I looked on the net if there was anything I could do to help this and I found out there was nothing.

Is your gum getting better from the antibiotic and the mouth rinse?

I take Boniva and hope I do not end up with the same problem.
If you don't mind, would you ask him if Boniva will cause the same problem?

Does your dentist have any idea why the implants would not stop causing pain?

I've heard it can take six months for the swelling to go down.
I have no experience with implants.

Owllover ~ I am SO sorry you're sufferiing with this! I just DON'T believe it's only limited to 'cancer patients' and you've just proved the point! Bless your heart, this is awful. Has the area started healing yet? I pray that it has!!!! Please let us know. God bless. Hugs, Lee
