Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.
Some of my obsessions are probably linked to certain events though.
Mum picked me up from school early to take me to a rememberance service, I remember feeling sad as everyone there was upset.
I was told that you can catch meningitus through other people's saliva so you shouldnt share a bottle of drink etc.
I developed a fear of saliva, so bad i couldnt stand near anyone in case they spat whislt talking. I became convinced i was contaminated-which began the compulsive hand washing.
So yes i believe OCD can stem from a event, but i also believe i was just naturally sensitive and vulnerable to it. My brother also had it whilst he was a kid, but grew out of it.Ive had mine about 14 years!
My Doctor said he devloped OCD when his mum died, but he only had it for 6 months as it was a reaction to her death, his way of coping. He grew out of it though.
No family that I know of have ocd or any other anxiety disorders
I started getting this as a child, but of course did not know what it was. No real event for me either.
I wouldn't wish this on my worst ememy.
when feeling overwelmed by events
it just seemed to pop up out of no where
at the time it seemed like something short term
in truth it appeard in the same way as when i
became a cutter for a short time
but this is a hell of a lot more easy to cope with than that
it was the same reaction
,it was as if my emotions were full
and i could not talke anymore
and some other reaction appeard
so in that case maybe we can say ocd came as a kind of coping strategy to the stress.to prevent from having a breakdown b/c of the stress in front of us ,ocd appears and puts mind on something else.i dont think obsessing
is a conscious choice.i think maybe the mind gives us that chance to escape the anxiety
not thatwe try to obsess but a "defensive" response.maybe not the best one but we do what we can at the time right?
so since we see that ocd comes after stress we can lessen stress or choose a DIFFERENT way of coping...like exercise, music, talking with a friend, therapist ..whatever works for us.
