Does anyone here have narcolepsy without cataplexy, sleep paralysis or hypnagogic hallucinations? I was diagnosed last week due to my severe EDS and MSLT results- I slept all five naps, for four of them had a sleep latency of under 3 minutes, and had 2 SOREM. My PSG was normal although I was in REM for 39% of the time which seems high to me. I also do not fall asleep uncontrollably. I have generalized anxiety though which I think contributes to that. I also sleep 10-12 hours a night which I thought was uncommom for narcoleptics. I am a light sleeper though and wake up a lot. I know something is severely wrong. The EDS has made a normal life impossible. I'm just scared of the diagnosis!

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...
So I can relate to your description!
I still haven't bothered with the MSLT because the current treatments are so similar to the bi-polar treatment I was already benefiting from when the Narcolepsy dx started showing up all over my family tree. Whether I actually have it myself, or knot, I need to understand it --at least a little-- in order to be supportive.
If my ifs are in alignment, I have had severe trouble with hypnogogic hallucinations and night terrors. I have sudden sleep attacks that I have wondered might be cataplexy, but I am far from certain. As I understand it, cataplexy (sleep paralysis?) is hard to diagnose because it happens outside the realm of what the MSLT screens for. Ditto for the hypnogogic hallucinations.
I fully understand your fear of the dx, but I continue to be hopeful that we can find our ways past that with open, honest dialogue. Once we get past our own fear of it, maybe we can work our way past the highly inaccurate social stigma.
I have not been diagnosed with Narcolepsy (yet). I have read that cataplexy occurs during times of strong emotions such as fear and laughter. In some people the muscles go weak and in the worst scenario they may fall to the floor as if in a faint. However, they are awake and can see and hear but simply cannot move. Sleep paralysis occurs on either falling asleep or waking up. It is said that during dreams our bodies are temporarily paralysed so that we don't act out or dreams. A Narcoleptic may not have cataplexy but suffer from EDS and sleep paralysis. They are two different symptoms of Narcolepsy. This message was really for Arfie as he wasn't sure if cataplexy and sleep paralysis are the same thing. I have Sleep Apnea and use CPAP but am still experiencing very bad daytime sleepiness, microsleeps, and brain fog and i have been looking into Narcolepsy and Hypersomnia, although neither one may be found to be whats causing my problems.
Thankfully my family understands and we do have a good laugh when I fall asleep while their talking or playing games.
