Has anyone else here read "A Dream within a Dream" by Edgar Allen Poe and thought that he too, must have some sort of sleep disorder?
There is so much heart break in the poem, where a man tries to explain ferverntely to others that what he dreams is as real to him as reality. My narcolepsy has led me to have vivid, lucid dreams every night since I was 5.
Because it all felt so real, and because it was all so beautiful I took my sleep paralisys and hallucinations as a form of payment. Now that I am in my 20s it is as hard to hold on to my dreams as to let them go. I fear taking medication because I don't want it to strip me of my other life.

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...
Edgar is far from the only classic author/artist/innovator I have suspected of having Narcolepsy and/or a psych disorder. Here in the 21st century, there are even greats willing to stand up and put ^it^ on the record. Still. . . I'll bet you dollars to wishes that many of them use meds. Edgar's meds are illegal today.
I am with you in believing there gifts within my difficulties. Especially my dreams. Gooder 'n' cable TV. Some of my best friends live in my dreams.
I like the nightmares better on TV, though. There are no Freddy Krugers in my dreams, but somehow my nightmares can make a butterfly even more scary than Freddy.
My biggest problem is falling asleep out of nowhere or feeling like I am choking to death when I try to wake up. For me that's terrifying. I understand I should consult a doctor about this, but the insurance situation is shit where I'm from, and it makes it hard to get any sort of help.
I can hardly wait to go to sleep when I am having critter serial dreams. Serial nightmares, not so much. . . Yes, that pain sure feels authentic to my senses, too. All the way to the need for healing the trauma. There are seldom physical wounds attached, but I the affected part feels ? ? ? Bruised?
