Generally, I think the conclusion that we've reached is to go by how you feel doing the stretch. Don't hold the stretch so long you have pain just because the book says you should.

It's so tempting to ignore the slow and gentle start and end up in pain from the resulting flare up. It surprises a lot of people how effective even just stretching for a few seconds is, not to mention how 'good' it feels, for the mind as well as the body.
