If you don't want to or can't get to outside help quickly you can start slowly on your own. Start with someone you trust by your dude if you can. Realize you are safe and help us near by. Practice calming yourself a much as possible. Start with small easy bites that you are not likely to choke on. Try to rebuild a calm association with food.
Also realize that the more you panic the more you are likely to coke. The calmer you are three less likely you are to choke. It is not easy. It takes work. What you feel is real. But I know that it can be changed. I used to have a very real fear of heights. I would literally get weak knees, sick to my stomach, sweat and the whole nine yards. I changed my association slowly. Since then I have repelled from towers in the Marine Corps and stood over the edge of the Grand Canyon. Not much for the average person but huge for me. These are different scenarios but we both feel very real things. I believe that if you desire change, with support, you can get there.
Best wishes.

Make a list of foods that you have choked on and avoid these for a while. Try a soft diet and a list of things you dont choke on. Tiny bites and some protien liquids until you are better at this.
You're so right. The more you panic the worse the breathing gets and then it's hard to calm down, when you cant breathe. Breathing is so important:)
In the hospital last week. I awoke to one of my shortness of breathe sufficating episodes. I called the nurse for my mestinon but it was "too soon" So I didnt get any. I paniced and then mt breathing got worse. I asked for Respritory Therapy and the nurse tryed to give me Robatussin.
I went into a wheezing panic attack and was sure I would be coded.
My anxiety made the situation so much worse for me.
I was fine and the situation was handled but it was certainly my anxiety of not breathing that made it so much worse.
It is something normal to be anxious about.. choking and not breathing. You have had this happen and know it is life threatening.
Maybe a speech therapist coud help you with the swollowing techniques too and help you with this.
It is a real part of your MG symptoms so you need to get help with this( swollowing) , so you decrease your chance of choking.
Hugs,
Jeannie
There are lot of cognitive-behavioral therapists; I'd advise going to one that will give you homework to do, such as tracking your anxiety symptoms in order to learn more about how they work, and identifying and disputing the negative thoughts and other though patterns which cause you problems. That way you'll take a more active part in taking care on your anxiety, and learn a few tools that you can use whenever you have problems.
