Have to vent

Went to a department store Saturday (husband and I) In my wheelchair.

Two older people um in their 60's-one lady said as we were going by her, Ya know it must be nice that all of these disabled people get all of these extra advantages/perks and we don't. The other lady agreed. GRRR I turned to her and said what did you just say? She looked at me and walked away. Told her I would gladly exchange places with her.

I wanted to go off on her so bad.. I wanted to be like disabled people do not get senior discounts,, oh and we just love paying for all of these meds, tests, and appts too. I ended up sending a letter to the editor at our local newspaper.

Why do people just assume we have it easy. We always have to prepare to go places-think things out. Just can not jump up and go.

I just had to tell everyone how heartless people can be.

Sorry for your frustrating and undeserving experience!
I haven't encountered anything like that but have had a few of my own experiences. I usually get a dirty look when I park in a disabled parking spot, they retract it when I get out and they see me walk with my cane. I hate to label but it is usually senior women.
I think the most ridiculous thing I had happen was a guy was practically running to beat me to the checkout line! I have also had my cane kicked out from under me, more times than I can count on one hand! All the times it has happened I have had one apology. They ignore it and take off.

I have had lots of encounters similar to the one you describe as well. I am 24 but I get mistaken for a high school student on a regular basis. My tremors have gotten really bad...and I work in a doctors office. I never thought I'd hear some of the things I hear daily from patients. I was recently asked if I was a recovering alcoholic...his exact words were "Your hands are shaking pretty bad...but you sure do look young...are you a recovering alcoholic?" I looked at him completely stunned as though I'd been slapped in the face...and emotionally that is exactly how I felt. I simply told him...It is funny that I look too young to have a disease but not too young to be a recovering alcoholic...but since we've gotten personal...I have MS. Needless to say when he had to come back into the office he was overly nice. I don't think some people will ever get it...and I try to remain calm and poliet regardless of their statements, most of the time I think that fact alone makes them feel worse about their actions.

Cathy that story is priceless, what a couple of sad gits - as I said before, no worries-the time will cone for ALL these ignoramuses and when it does they will get their just deserts.
