Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
Chiropractors, if you get migraines, PLEASE stay away from them. Especially if you look to crack your neck. Migraine patients are more at risk for strokes, and having your neck cracked by a chiro can severely increase that risk. If you want manipulation, look for a qualified D.O. who does manipulation. Even then, the relief is only temporary and will not "cure" your pain.
Acupuncture on the other hand, can give you some relief, but the pain you are talking about...won't rid you of it all...but it's worth a try.
About your MRI and CT scans. What you said is actually good new. What they are looking for when you get them is either something physical like a tumor that could be causing the headaches OR prior stokes in the brain. The fact that you have neither of these is good news. It just means they don't know the origins of your migraines, which is the case of most people with migraine. Don't let that frustrate you. Let that be somewhat of a relief for you.
One thing you have to know about neurologists is that they are NOT headache specialists. They know *some things* but not the majority of things about headaches. They are more a one trick pony. They are not up on all the latest studies and research, not up on all the latest medications used to treat migraines. They just can't be. They have to up on so many other neurological disorders, migraines are just not their top priority. That's not to say that their are not some that aren't good, but the majority are only mediocre.
It sounds like your next move is to research and find a headache specialist/headache center in or near your area. Their approach is just so different. Yes, they will give you pills, but not just pills once you have a headache. They work with you to get you on migraine preventatives. And not just one. Some people have to be on multiple preventatives, like myself. And they work to tweak that combination until they find a combo that works for you. They will also give you rescue meds for when a migraine breaks through so you are not suffering for days and days.
They also talk to you about identify identifying your triggers. I know you said you went vegan, but that might not be where your problem lies. I know for me, food isn't really a trigger. Weather is my #1 trigger. Every single time weather comes through, I'm down for 2 days. Bright light is another. Bright artificial light is another. Lough noise is another. Smells is another. So I'm not saying diet won't help. For many people it will. but be warned. Things like citrus fruit, bananas, tomatoes, can all be a trigger.
Please don't be discouraged. You can get a handle on this. Please find a doctor that will start to work with you with medicine instead of just throwing pills at you. Finding a doctor who cares really makes all the difference in the journey, I promise.
If you think about it, there have been really good advancements in migraine treatments. We had the triptans, then we had devices like cefely, then we got botox, now we have these IV medications coming out. My point is, don't lose hope. There are new advancement that come out it seems at pretty good intervals. This is not a field that just stands still. This is how I stay positive. If I didn't realize just how much research they were doing ALL THE TIME, I would probably think that nothing would every help me. But I know their is ALWAYS something on the horizon. Just believe that.
I wish you all the best.
I’ve had Botox, didn’t notice a huge difference in migraines but definitely for my wrinkles. I recently got the Cefaly device and it helps but it can get too intense where I’m taking it off halfway through the session.
I feel like I’ve tried everything! It’s a frustrating battle that no one understands unless they experience it. I’ve had mine for about 8 years, and the only thing that helps is Excedrin which I take almost everyday only 2 in the morning. Mine are also genetic unfortunately so that is also frustrating knowing that I have no control over them and don’t know what is causing me to get them daily!
My next approach is doing an IV Treatment to see if that does the trick! I really want kids soon, & hope to have my migraines under control before I get pregnant.
I'm getting very hopeless because I just graduated college with a masters degree and I'm unable to get a job. The daily pain and headaches are causing me to live a life I am not used to. I'm a very active person and currently it hurts me to do the simplest tasks. Do you or anyone else have any words of wisdom on how you cope with living with chronic migraine?
I have been able to be seen by a specialist who is working with me a lot better than any neurologist that i've had. We are actually looking into CSF leaks or pressure issues and I am in the process of getting a referral to get a spinal tap.
Since I have not been seeing any successes with the migraine medication I have been taking, I am just worried that something else might be at play. I am currently taking Topamax (in replace of the trokendi xr) and I am still not seeing any improvement in my headaches and am still not eating right. Has anyone else experienced this??
