Facing same disease as husband

I am still grieving the loss of my husband who died from lung cancer July 27, 2013 and on Monday, was told my chest x-ray is abnormal. I am going for a cat scan, but have some of the symptoms, remembering this time last year with my husband. I really have no fear of dying. I am 74 years and have lived a wonderfully blessed life. I have four successful children who have been very good to me. My biggest concern is telling my adult children (ages 50-57). My sons are on opposite ends of the country, but my two daughters are live in the same city as me and have been so protective, calling me, taking me out, etc. since their Dad passed away. What I did learn dealing with the big three hospitals in our city, is that, at one, surgery was done before the MRI was read. He had the MRI on Friday and the Surgeon performed the surgery on Monday and in the process cut a nerve, for which he turned into a zombie from morphine and methadone to kill the pain. This was in addition to the lung cancer. These were all teaching hospitals and were very detached. A very unpleasant experience. I am praying that this new hospital will give me the comfort I need at this time.

I wish you all the best and I hope everything eases up on you. I have lung cancer myself (terminal , no treatment) however this site has helped me a lot. There is a lot of compassion and really good people here. Terminal illness is also a very good group if you have not seen it yet.

I had a cat scan today and they say the Doctor will have the results by Tuesday. How can I tell my adult children? That is the biggest fear I have. They have been so protective since their Dad died. I don't how to say it. Help me.

Last fall a nodule was found on my chest x-ray but it turned out to be nothing. Many people , especially your age have them I was told. So maybe you should not discuss anything with your children yet , until you get the results.
I hope everything turns out well. I know it's very difficult to wait for the results. Please hang in there and think positive. Hugs !

I send you my love and my strength. I am in awe of your resolve...and I hope your children are a great source of comfort to you during this difficult time. And perhaps the 'news' won't be as you are thinking...but you know I am a daughter of two parents who succumbed to lung cancer 20 years apart from each other. I will begin to get lung screening x-rays at the age of 55...to watch for lung cancer...if that is at all possible.

Meanwhile, we all trudge along to the best of our abilities. Please know your entry touched me - good luck.

My heart goes out to you for what you have endured. What happened to you husband should never happen to anyone! Your children were raised by you, they will be ok with this news & will be there to support you in any way possible. One thought about a doctor that may be able to help, is to contact Dr. Catalona, he has a site that you can google as his name. He's in the Chicago area & has been in leader in cancer research for well over 30 years. Although his focus is prostate cancer, he's also doing research on cancer within families, so although he wouldn't be able to be your doc, may be able to send you in right direction. Feel free to tell him I gave you his name for help, I'm Pat, daughter of his past patient, Hillard Branch. My father would be pleased to know his experience may help others.

Dr. Catalona is the specialist doctors & others from all over the world go to, he is the best & the most passionate & compassionate doctor I've ever met. I contacted him when dx'd w/Breast Cancer '07 & he was great, contacted me over a weekend by email & gave me needed info to help with my care in the St. Louis, MO area, although he had left this area in '99 or so. That is how caring of a person he is & has always been. He's a wonderful man, so just may be worth talking to him about your concerns with the treatment your husband received, that is truly sad.
