I'm in. my early 60's also and have a very small family, and I know exactly how you feel. I am so tired of being alone. As years went on, friendships left. I've made attempts at new friendships, but in this day and age it's just impossible. I live in New York City. You would THINK a city as big as NYC you'd be able to make friends? Are you kidding? I've never seen such a crowded city with so many LONELY people. Unbelievable. I gave up. Now I just live in my loneliness and depression, I tried, extended myself, etc. , gave up.
If you could share your passion for gardening you would interact more with people with that shared interest. Garden clubs, green-thumb societies, botanical gardens, garden stores...start googling and start exploring. The only way, I think, we're going to meet people in the flesh is to get out of the house! Or, if your garden is spectacular have an open-day for people to come and view your garden - make sure you have some security present.
