Loneliness Support Group
Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. Loneliness is more than the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from other people. The lonely person may find it difficult or even impossible to have any...
I have been extremely isolated from others for an amount of time that is so long that it makes me highly uncomfortable to let anyone I might make a friend of in the off-line world know about it. It's absolutely bizarre. I have finally started trying to change the situation in the last couple years, but there has been very little improvement. I somehow can't put myself out to people I don't know, and I have virtually no one I can go out with that might be able to help me approach new people. I have been trying for a few weeks to find local support groups for people dealing with depression, but I am finding almost none, and very few people participating in them. I was speaking with a therapist last year, and she asked me about what sorts of things I have in my life that bring me happiness, what might I direct myself toward when I am feeling discouraged. The answer came to me almost immediately; nothing. I am alone, and it is so terribly painful to me. I am absolutely not a loner, I hate that my life is the way it is, as regards this. That is why nothing I engage in brings me happiness, I don't do anything in the company of someone who cares for me. I could be doing the most enjoyable thing there could be to me, but if I am without companionship, what is the value of that? That is how I feel about life, my approach to life. To me, the way I have lived is extremely unhealthy, and it hurts, more than I could possibly say. At that point, I had no friends at all. Now I have one casual one, who doesn't know about my freakish existence. Two perhaps, I met someone locally, but through an on-line group, in December, that I confided this bizarre thing in; unfortunately, aside from being very supportive initially, she quite rarely reaches out to me, and I don't want to burden her as we don't know each other that well. I live in Oklahoma. Is there anyone who might like to talk?

I don't give out my exact location or my phone number or real email on online forums. I am sorry, I don't mean to be rude but it simply isn't safe.
If you are suffering with depression, do keep looking for help. See if you have a local NAMI group. There is one in North Texas that does a lot of support groups and some meetings via zoom. It might help to go to a real psychiatrist and get a thorough depression screening. Could change your life. You have made connections with a few people and that is really something positive. Don't underestimate the small things. Sometimes we say they aren't good enough but friendships take time.
Yes, I had an extremely difficult experience from the time I started school; I imagine I was somewhat outgoing before that, but the way I was treated altered my demeanor. I have attempted, and continue to try to be more outgoing, but it is like being at war with myself where that is concerned. I don't know why. Another thing that is odd about it is that it is just very initially; once I have some interaction underway with someone, if it is a positive experience, I can become very engaged very quickly. As I recall, she was of the mind that I am, that it is what I experienced as a child, teenager. I was only able to speak with her for a few months last spring, summer. I am to start meeting with someone else in a couple weeks.
Again, thank you for your response.
It's funny, I wasn't very popular while young but had a son who was. So I got a chance as an observe to see how you become popular. And if you want to have a lot of friends, then go for it. Go to different events, smile, dress well, listen to people's stories and express interest, Be flexible, a nice person, not easily offended, do things other people like, be happy and smile. If you're popular you're going to be doing a lot of different things which other people like.
