(2) I would love to volunteer elsewhere but the only places where I live are nursing homes and a food bank, I am leaving those for last. I am really at my wits end. You see, once you are older its so hard to make friends because most people have their lives and friends in place and there's no room or desire for someone new, Most of my life I worked in Manhattan for a large law firm and loved what I did and the people I interacted with and the friends I made. I still have those friends but they live elsewhere and with the price of gas so high, it makes it difficult to get together.

You enter your location and what your interested in and it connects you to groups of people that are planning an activity based on that interest. The meet ups are in public places, so you don't have to worry about anything hinky going on.
I don't know if this group is close to you, but there's a meetup group called "The In Crowd: For 40s, 50s, plus" for people that are looking to meet other people around their age. http://www.meetup.com/TheInCrowd/
I hope this helps!
