I....gotta watch who I talk to----my neighbor told me of the ex-homeless man living in our building being a convicted child molester, and sure enough his photo is on state site about offenders.
A few days ago he was telling me his sob story of getting kicked out his apt for owing 60 dollars---now I wonder if his landlord found out about his criminal past.

Let's get a few things straight here:
First, homelessness is not a crime. Second, many people who end up in jail in the USA are not criminals; they are people with mental disabilities that have never been diagnosed or never treated. USA has a policy of investing in jails and incarceration and not in education or mental health services.
Third, you should be careful of EVERYONE when it comes to children sexual abuse, that include family members, and - especially - people at church.
Fourth, what does people's race have to do with anything? Why do you have to specify that they are white or latino?
Fifth, there's not such thing as "typical" anything about child molesters. Again, you should watch out children from EVERYONE, especially family members and people at church. Don't believe me? Just visit the DS group on survivors of child abuse.
Sixth, are they bothering you? Do you have a reason to call the cops on them? Has it ever occur to you that they may not have a coat on because they can't afford one? You don't need to become their friend, but for as long as they don't bother you, there's no reason for you to be nasty.
I don't look at the registry cause I'm afraid some of my neighbors will be on it and I'll be freaked out and uncomfortable in my own home. But, if I had a child, you'd be sure I'd be looking up who's who so I can keep my kid FAR FAR away from them. They have a legal right to live where they live, but it does make it very uncomfortable for others.
I agree that you have to look out for family members and other close people in your life too, when it comes to protecting your child. But this topic isn't about a child specifically, but a couple of creepy ass individuals roaming about the neighborhood and living in the same building.
As a victim of sexual abuse I worry about my girls but I'm not the type to keep them under lock and key. They will never grow if always protected. We let them know who to watch out for and they have many safe houses in the neighborhood since they do fundraiser on many streets.
Megan's Law is great...only if the scumbags do what they are supposed to do. Just had one on the news. Can't remember exact location but he was wanted for failing to register and got caught stealing a purse I believe. Gets him off the streets again. The ones that register are better than the scum that don't. That's why you have to watch everyone. Personally know a few that got busted for child porn.
i shook hands with one man at my dropin--a couple years later he caught molesting a FOUR YEAR OLD.
another man at my drop-in, i bought a soda for....he also caught molesting a FOUR YEAR OLD, with the mom even involved.
a non-molester? who lived upstairs would vandalize my bike, just cause i complained about water leaking from his apt and...flooding..my apt; i now keep my bike in my crowded apt, in my bathroom!
my town has every welfare program imaginable, and yes i've benifited from some....but some really bad people have shown up for such progams.
being poor and down and out, in a rural slum, I do come across more dysfunctional people, with various criminal convictions, than I would have, I certainly believe, if I was living in a more upscale neighborhood.
and, again, my hometown has all the social programs that 2 nearby towns, who have a more thriving downtown....don't want.
the police and ambulance have been to this building enough times since the ever-changing bunch moved upstairs; thankfully, I missed most of it.
I can now also be glad that people going up and down the steps don't say hello---that actually bothered me before this...still another attitude change.
5 long year wait for me to live in govt housing 30 miles away---where you cant live if you have a criminal record.
Furthermore, I neglected to add that registered sex offender doesn't mean child molester. People in the USA get in that registry for all kinds of things, from public urination to getting caught having sex in a car with your own spouse.
penntucky does mention that his neighbors are ex-homeless, which is why I made the statements I made.
Also, it's ridiculous to think that child molesters have some kind of thing in common such as walking with no coat in the winter.
Where I work we have a program for ex-offenders, and my program is the only one in my city that accepts registered sex offenders. I work and advocate for ex-offenders rights, and work educating the public on how to HELP people not to incur in recidivism.
We work with the prison system to provide help to reintegrate them into society.
And certainly nosy neighbors trying to study what makes them look like child molesters doesn't make any contribution to anything.
So I do know one or two things about the subject at hand. Far from looking for "drama".
How about acknowledging that my statements actually have some validity?
I've had family who's gone to jail for doing stupid things and breaking the law, and it's on them whatever consequences comes form that until they decide to get their lives together. If they're willing to put the time in and trying to get on a strait path, I can be forgiving. The world can be forgiving.
But sex crimes in an entirely different ball game, especially when involving a innocent child who is broken and psychologically scarred for the rest of their life. There's a reason there are laws against child molesters living within a certain vicinity of schools and other places children are.
I think you saw "criminal' and jumped to conclusions to try to defend the people you work with. But this isn't about them.

only after tehdreamer's post was I ABLE to remember about the HOMELESS REDNECKS in my hillbilly town.
one HOMELESS REDNECK smashed a bottle over the head of another man, at a long time lowlife hangout, killing him, over a coat...hard to prove, so he's still walking about.
most of the HOMELESS in my hillbilly town are homophobic rednecks---with me being a hetrosexual nerd who has to worry about, once again, being called a homophobic name by such HOMELESS who hang around.
when many homeless, and others down on their luck, go for help, they are all mr or ms innocent----afterwards, their true selves come out, for people like me to deal with, away from any govt office.

We have news reports always of crimes committed by homeless, who are criminals or sex offenders on the lam. We also sadly have seniors who are robbed, badly beaten and raped. So...no not just children are molested.
What kind of person, robs, beats and rapes a woman in her 70's or 80's? Would you want that person living near you? Penn has every reason to be concerned. It is better to err on the side of caution, then let his guard down and possibly end up a victim to any kind of criminal. The young and elderly and disabled are just easy targets.
Is the public outraged when a senior hits the robber with a fry pan or they chase their attacker off at gun point? Hell, no! They cheer them on for being in control, not to become a victim. No one has sympathy for the criminal. You choose to violate societies rules, you deserve what you get...no respect from decent people.
Penn: Stay safe and move out if you can.
