Loneliness Support Group
Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. Loneliness is more than the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from other people. The lonely person may find it difficult or even impossible to have any...
Hi all,
This is my first time posting in this group but I've been feeling more lonely lately so I thought it was a good time to post. I moved to Memphis, TN in August of 2021 from Michigan for school. I moved by myself, 10 hours away from all my friends and family. I wouldn't say I'm a homebody but I like my close group of people in my life and I like to stay to myself rather than be outgoing. Thankfully I have great roommates that I've grown to love and am now very close with, but I'd like some more friends down here because whenever they're busy I'm just by myself. If anyone has any advice or tips on how to get out and make new friends, I'd appreciate it!

I have a possible new diagnosis to discuss with my therapist tomorrow. It might be the answer to a question that I have had since I was 19. It's called Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). It happens to a large percentage of people with ADHD, which I have. Actually, I have been watching videos about ADD/ADHD lately. I remember my Mom telling me that she watched a show on ADD and she...

Actually, our Governor called a State of Emergency. I pray that my electric doesn't go out. I had already planned to stay home all weekend to recuperate from a cold and do online training for my job. That will take many hours. I am worried for the outside kitties. I hope your weekend goes better for you.
It's great that you have roommates that you like, and they are now your new friends. Maybe ask them if they have other friends, and invite everyone over, like a party, and that way, you will meet those extended friends, too.
On Daily Strength, respond to other people's posts. You may think you have nothing to add but practicing adding something kind and supportive will help you get out of your shell or comfort zone.
Oh, and join groups or clubs on campus. Go to the meetings and be friendly. Offer to help do tasks or take a leadership role. Pick 3 campus clubs and start going to them. Go to art events and dance events and that kind of thing. Go by yourself even if roommates are busy.
I feel I have to say this but do be careful with new people until you really know them much better. Scammers and narcissists like to look for lonely people to befriend. You can be friendly without trusting everyone right away. You can eat lunch or dinner with a new person without loaning them money or taking them back to your room.
As far as advice, I would say, join groups where there are like minded people. What are you interested in or do you have any hobbies? If you are a member of any faith then I am sure you will find them at school. Invite others to do things with you that pertain to the things you like doing. I went to the tennis court one hot day and watched them play. I asked around and told some people I was looking for a partner and I found one. He turned out to be the state champ and I lost every game but we became lifelong friends.
Try not to isolate yourself but stay busy and you will be fine.
God Bless
