Hi, I have been living with and doing business with my boyfriend for the past 3 years. We dated for 6 months long distance, then he moved in. Our problems started pretty soon afterward. I started noticing that he had to do things in a certain way. He turned out to have really bad anxiety and blow up, cry, get angry, etc if things were not done the way he thought they should be. He would have irrational fears and worries, and wear me out for hours, days, weeks about these fears until it turned out they were not true. Anything from our flyers not being delivered on time(we run an event business), to other people moving or touching his equipment if he had to leave it alone for a few minutes(he expected me to stand there watching it if he couldn't even though I had other responsibilities), to people talking to him while he is in the process of setting up(he wants them to all stay out of the room but it's impossible to prevent people from coming in and asking questions DURING AN EVENT) and other things. I did events for years previous to this and it was just never THIS HARD. He makes working with him a misery. He took control of our kitchen and I have not been able to cook anything for 3 years, and he gets mad if I put anything in the refrigerator because he has places where he wants everything put. He has specific sponges for specific things in the sink and gets mad if you use a different one. Somehow something got used to clean the sink in our old apt that had once cleaned or touched the toilet and I found out that even months later he believed the sink to be "contaminated by feces germs" because of this and was having anxiety about it. He has specific places for everything in his area and doesn't want anything there to be touched, which is fine with me because I like privacy in my area too. If you casually mention that you want to do something, he takes this to mean that it will DEFINATELY HAPPEN AND IT IS SET IN STONE, so if you then deviate from the original "plan"(which to you just means you casually mentioned that you might like to do something), he becomes irate and upset because you "changed the plan without telling him". He also hates if you add a chore to an originally scheduled chore, such as if I say I want to go to the store but then decide to drop the laundry off before I go, he gets really angry and irate.
It's been hard to deal with ALL the anger and stress, the first year I kept feeling like I was going to have a heart attack. I've developed a couple of new wrinkles too. The second year I feel bad about this but I started yelling and screaming at him. I yelled, threw things and threatened to throw him out because I could not take it and I didn't understand what was wrong. It sucks because he ARGUES ME BACK ABOUT CRAZY STUFF. He insisted that if I hung a piece of lace on the wall of one of the clubs we work at, the fire department would DEFINATELY BE THERE AND CLOSE THE PLACE DOWN. I think that was the start of me realizing that something just wasn't right. I got so angry and I screamed him down about that, because I just was unwilling to have a partner who would believe that the city would mobilize it's forces to take care a piece of lace on the wall of a club. I even hit the kitchen wall with a pan and there are still two round circles in the wall of my old apt from that crazy argument.
Before he lived with me he suffered a nervous breakdown over his father stealing his trust fund, which is understandable and could happen to anyone. He was living at his mother's house and she had forced him onto medication. The medication was making him feel sick and miserable, unable to sleep, and had increased his panic attacks. He couldn't go anywhere and was overheating, and was obviously a different person than he had been before(I knew him before the breakdown). With my help he got off the medication and now drinks no caffiene or anything that could irritate his nervous system. I thought I was doing him some good, but now I feel that maybe the mother KNEW HE HAD OCD. She didn't want me to help him get off of it, but she didn't explain to me what the matter was. He told me that the doctor had given him the medication for depression, and I didn't agree with medicating people's depression over normal life events. So much for my armchair psychiatry!!! I hope I didn't do him a great disservice by getting him off the medication. I have paid the price in stress since he moved in here.
I just want my old life back, when I lived by myself and didn't have ALL the arguing, ALL the stress, ALL the craziness, the rules, etc. I am positive this is OCD. I feel used because nobody told me. I confronted him and all he did was argue me AGAIN about how this problem was because I AM AN ABUSER AND RAGEAHOLIC. NO- I REFUSE TO ACCEPT CRAZINESS. I feel bad for yelling if this really is a mental problem, but his mother should have warned me or he should have told me if he was ever diagnosed. He went to counseling, did his counselor ever tell him he had OCD? Is that why he was on medication? I am really suspicious that she knew but just didn't tell me. She seemed distressed when I helped him get off the medication but didn't say why.
I feel tired, burned out, BEYOND burned out- I feel like if he moves out of here, I am going to have to sleep for 2 months to get over the damage to my nerves from the past 3 years. Oh, and our sex life has SUCKED. After the first 2 months it dwindled down to once or twice a week, and I like to do it every day! And it feels mechanical, like he is calculating every move and is not acting out of passion. Occasionally it is good but not very often. Whatever this disorder is, it sucks all his energy and he can take or leave sex. LAME, I always said I'd never get into a relationship like that. Yet here I am.
There are some good things about him or else it could never have lasted 3 years. He is obsessive about work and has pulled off some pretty amazing feats because of it, like doing events everyone else said were impossible. My house and especially kitchen has been uncharacteristically clean and well stocked (only I can't cook anything or move things around in the fridge without upsetting him). He fixes things very well (but gets obessed and anxious about the jobs while he is doing them), and takes care of our pets very well. But he works from home and having all the stress from him being here all the time is just really hard. As I said, I often dream about my old life and wistfully think about the times I could just have peace and quiet, meditate, etc. He refuses to do yoga or meditate by the way, and has no spirituality. Not only that, he told me at first that he believed that there are "writers", people who work for the government or even higher than that who script our lives and make things happen, and sometimes they do experiments on us just to see what will happen. Hmmmmm.......when I confronted him about this later on, when I started suspecting that something was just not right, he claimed that he had changed his views. But I wonder...he doesn't believe in any higher power in the sense that most people do, and obfuscates as to what his beliefs actually are. I suspect that he still believes that there are "writers", but just stopped telling me.
OCD? I believe so. And I can't see myself dealing with this for the rest of my life. I miss the ease and casual affection of a normal relationship, and the peace and quiet that comes along with one. Thank God we didn't get married or have kids. That's another bad thing, he is against having kids.

I try as hard as I can to see the real guy underneath ALL the OCD but I just feel really resentful about the past 3 years of Hell and expense. I still can't believe I went for this. I want to go on a date with someone who is just nice and hot. I've given up on the whole life partner, husband thing for now. I just want someone who is FUN, to whom it is not LIFE OR DEATH if the order that I did things disturbed him. What a cumbersome, awful killjoy. I used to think of myself as quite a jovial, funloving person. How did I accept someone who's life is 100% dominated by imaginary rules that he made up??????????????????
He tries to spend every second of every day that I am not at work around me and I have to yell at him to go out. Every week at some point I have to say "Have you been out of the apartment today?" to gain time alone by myself or else I would have ZERO private time. I never have enough private time. He thinks that if he goes to the store for an hour and comes back, that was enough private time.
My friends say "you look drained." I AM being drained. I am around someone from the time I wake up in the morning till the time I go to bed. The only privacy I really experience is in my car, and when I yell at him to leave the apt. That's usually when he's been home for 3 days straight.
I can only hope that each day does not desintigrate into a screaming fight about something that is an OCD problem of his. He has gotten better but I still see him worrying about the same things, he's just not allowed to say anything about it to me any more. That has eased up some of the situation. But really, he needs to not work at home any more.
So it's best if he talks to people who are going through the same illness.
It may be difficult to convince at first but during your convincing - whatever you do - don't shout remain calm no matter how much he annoys you and be assertive
I returned to the house after thinking deeply and advised my boyfriend that this problem was so bad now that I could not live with it. There are two choices, either he agrees that he has a problem and goes to the psychotherapy once a week, or he leaves and I will help him pack and go back to his mom's house where I found him. Although we have a business together, I feel that at this point I can do it better on my own if he's going to be disabled every other day with these attacks. At this point it's about preserving my own life, it's going to go down again if I have to deal with this day after day.
I have to wonder, is it worth it to take on the extra job of OCD if I have this guy? We connected with each other beautifully 2 days ago, but now I can't even be in the house. Bags under my eyes again. I walk around with dark circles under my eyes and that is just not right. Everything I want to do gets swept away in the storm of OCD unless I cling onto it very tightly. I just can't take it.
I made a personal checklist on my phone to make sure that personal things I need to do are being done. It has items such as "how does your hair look? Is it presentable or are you wearing a messy bun?" "Did you attend the gym 3 times this week? If not, why not?" "How is your OB health? Did you take acidophilous? Did you make time for self care?" "Are your nails done? How about toenails, what do they look like?" And so forth. These are things that slipped away from me in the past 3 years. I was walking around looking only half as good as I could have, and BEING only half as good as I could have, because all my energy was being leeched away by this guy!
We have similar interests, we work well together when he is mentally healthy, we are both smart and interested in the same subjects and he does love me. But this problem is FROM HELL. I don't know that it's worth it. Since I started working on my appearance and taking advantage of more opportunities, very worthy men have been expressing an interest in me. This is a tough situation!
I thought I was being very nice by allowing him the chance to even go to counseling but still remain in my life. After 3 years of turmoil, you would think he would be sorry, apoligize, and be grateful for the chance to do better. No. Instead, he will just move on to someone else unsuspecting in order to remain OCD. The OCD is more important to him than I am. All I can say is Wow.
I have been sleeping in my own bed, and last night he made me feel guilty because he was lonely so I allowed him to sleep next to me but then felt resentful and had a headache this morning when I woke up, and bad dreams. I would just prefer if he stays in his own room from now on. The lack of privacy in here is killing me, the apt is small. I am quiet all the time so that he can't hear what I'm doing, and if I have to have a phone conversation I go outside to my car. This situation became unlivable.
So I guess it is up to ME to find him a therapist and a group to attend. Again, I have to come through. I'm just so sick of this and so angry about my time and energy that has been wasted. Love? I don't feel it. This is why it is good to live with someone before a real commitment like marrige, OMG. I'm not going to find him a therapist and a group, if he can't do it for himself, let him move. I'm not lifting a finger for Mr. I Waste Your Time, Energy and Life again. I'm just going to make all my plans for me, alone, from now on. Christmas, Birthdays, Holidays- ME. That is IT.
I have now been forced to calculate time spent alone vs/ time spent with him, I've been forced to laboriously analyze every goal in my life and schedule time for it, I've been forced to fight hard for that time, I've been forced to develop a hair trigger that stops me from enjoying whatever moment I'm in to crack down on the OCD, I've been in probably HUNDREDS of verbal arguments with him some of them quite nasty, I've been forced to become a hard and watchful person rather than just going along and appreciating every moment in my life effortlessly, I've been forced to focus on basics that I used to find effortless, every small thing has become a struggle and a life or death situation.
I've been forced to make an itemized list of personal beauty and hygine habits and fight hard to get them accomplished, day by day, with vocal and emotional resistance from him. ("Do we HAVE to stop at the beauty store NOW? I have to get home!" "Yes, because if I can't use my quality skin lotion for another month and get more wrinkles because of you, I will burn the house down with you in it" Type thing. Of course I'm not serious about that last statement but it's the way this makes me feel.) Stopping at that store was something I never used to have to THINK about before, much less FIGHT HARD TO DO.
I've re-analyzed every situation where he is in the car with me. If it's possible for him to take the train, I let him do that instead. I have a separate room which I only allow him in sometimes. He now knows that he has to check to see if I'm busy or in the middle of something before he can just HAVE my time. He knows that he has to spend time away from the home AT LEAST every other day.
The saddest part about all this is knowing that he now understands how terribly he affects me and has come to accept the separation, rather than just get help. Is it THAT HARD to admit what is going on and at LEAST find some sort of free group? A counselor? SOMETHING?
He says "I'm sick of being terrified all the time". I say "get help". That's what I always say to him now. "My heart is racing." "Get Help". "I'm so worn out". "Get Help." "My shirt is soaked with sweat". "Get Help." "You terrified me when you _____ ". "Get help". Get help, get help, GET HELP. It doesn't work. He went online and decided that he just has General Anxiety Disorder and is now on a trip about that.
I know that I'm enabling him, allowing him to live here dirt cheap and relatively comfortably and just do his low paying business from home. Why am I doing that? I was looking online at apts for rent and seriously considering grabbing all my stuff when he is out and just moving. I moved us in here with a U Haul I rented, so I can move out again on my own. Or telling him to go visit his mom, and then while he is down there packing his stuff into my car and driving it down there and dropping it off, and then changing the lock.
How do you recover from something like this? How could I ever recover the ease and casual affection I had come to take for granted? Will I always be watchful for crazy behavior now? I believe that I deserve to enjoy my life more than this.
He can plan and pay for supplies for a barbecue that he wants to have this Sunday that he is trying to guilt me into attending even though I am worn out and tired from working to support the both of us, but he can't pay for one counseling session. He can plan to go upstate to his friend's house and spend the gas money and time to get there, but can't get a counseling session. He can go to Manhattan and walk into a store and just happen to buy some brandy that is on sale there, but cannot go into Manhattan and buy a counseling session.
He sees me going around the house with bags under my eyes, feeling lousy from arguement after arguement with energy drained, feeling like I am on my last legs all the time, but that's not a good enough reason to go to counseling. It's ok for me to look this way and feel this way in his book. He isn't looking that great either, the controversy had been raging for a couple years now and it's drained him out somewhat, but he is ok with the dilapidated look he now wears. He is light years away from how he was when I first met him 10 years ago, in a bad way. His clothing is falling apart, he walks around with a 5 oclock shadow all the time unless there is an event to go to where he wants to look good, and he has a paunch, wheras when I met him he had a flat stomach. Why am I holding on? This is not the guy I met and liked. This is someone who refuses to get help.
I of course found this crazy, and he wouldn't back down off of "I SHOULD tell him the ORDER that I'm going to do things, and I shouldn't have eaten an energy bar". This of course was the last straw for me for that day and I screamed, cursed and told him that it was truly over and I wanted to eject him from the car right then and there, and the day I have to tell some man when I buy and energy bar is the day either I die or he dies. That nobody controls my food and the minute somebody tries that is IT. So you can imagine how pleasent the car was the whole way to the BBQ party.
I let him know that I had given him a chance to get help, he chose not to get help despite having a week to do so, and I was completely done with him. That nobody in the whole world is going to put up with the craziness, especially not me. Later on at the BBQ I got a call from my landlord letting me know that he finally sold his apt and now we need to move in 2 months. It's actually right on time. My boyfriend made living in this small apt a misery and I don't even have that many nice memories of the place, even though I was able to have a small garden, plants, etc. for the first time in a while.
He has made living with him a misery, and the only thing I have to show for it is a dinged credit report and a business that doesn't make that much money. And 3 years off my biological clock. Yes I'm pissed off. Now he insists on having some barbecue party over here today with people in the garden. I'm going to check out on this one and go to the gym or bookstore. He's not wasting and draining out my energy any more.
The truth is, before she allowed him to live in her guest house, he was homeless for a year. He had moved out from his girlfriend of 10 years and had NEVER BEEN ABLE TO GET ANOTHER PLACE, but crashed with various friends getting more and more dillapidated. If his mother had not taken him in, he may have ended up on the street. The truth is that his mother most likely WILL take him back in, but she leaves him to stew in whatever mental problem he's got without asking questions or trying to help him. She forced him onto Zoloft by saying he had to take it or leave the house, he had nasty side effects but she didn't care, she is on Zoloft and feels fine and thinks that he will eventually be OK on it. She was in the process of getting him to sign up for Public Assistance because he had been unable to find a job for the year or so he had been living in her guest house when I allowed him to move into my apt. She had paid for him to see some doctors but they never got to the root of the problem and he was left uncomfortably and unhappily on Zoloft and that's how things were probably going to stay. I think he reached out to me to save himself from this fate.
If I dump him now, he will most likely have to go back to his mom's. I don't believe he is mentally capable of finding the right help for himself, and I don't believe she will ever do it. So if I abandon him now, nobody will ever help him probably. He may or may not eventually find a job. However, his life will never be what it could have been. He doesn't turn to people for help usually. He's not religious and scorns help from religious organizations. And the few friends he's got left won't put themselves out there for him THAT MUCH- they hook him up with nice things once in a while but no fulltime job or support from what I can see. Guaranteed he probably won't turn to anyone for help but will go on pretending like he doesn't have problems as much as he can, suffering, talking to himself when he thinks he's alone and nobody can hear him, drinking when he's alone, etc. God forbid that his mother's inheritance won't be enough for him to live on for the rest of his life, because if not he really runs the risk of being homeless.
I hope to God Obamacare kicks in in 2014 and there is some more help for him than what I can provide. I think I've pretty much made the decicion to do what I can for him, come what may. I can't stand to see him meet a terrible fate. I may not stay in a relationship with him but I won't leave him to rot. I feel really bad about the screaming and the arguements now. This is a serious situation and he is very ill, to the point where nobody can stand being around him that much. Those are the people who usually slip through the cracks. I want to see him able to work and identify with people again, and really be close to people again. I have no children and my family members are not that close to me because of circumstances. Why not? Why not help this guy? Nobody else is going to help him in this sick place called the USA. And we do have some friends who care. We've got to be family for one another. Family doesn't just throw family away.
He sensed that he really was at the end of the rope with me unless he changed, so he stopped drinking all alcohol and started drinking Valerian tea. The tea seemed to work although it made him really tired and knocked him out. That was actually a blessing since usually he is OCDing for all he's worth until he drops from exhaustion. It's sad, though- it's still a waste of his life to have him tired and falling asleep all the time. It's just a waste that doesn't also interfere in MY life. It lets me get some peace and quiet for once. At least he found something that works, for now.
But still no therapist and no group, and no admission of OCD.
Not only that, we did an event together which he did drink at. I allowed the drinking because it was a celebratory event. The nastiness, arguing and OCD came back full force. It was such a dissapointment to deal with after a week of Valerian and very few OCD symptoms. Once can get used to that kind of peace right away. That familiar awful feeling of anger and resentment was with me the whole event, and especially on the way home. Instead of going home with someone fun and exciting, it's the same old problems with me in the car on the way home. The drunken, angry and crazy guy sitting next to me making me feel bad(in the passenger seat, of course, because he can't afford his own ride). So now I see I will have to ban the alcohol 100%, it intensifies the symptoms greatly. It's strange, one of the excuses he gave me for the drinking was to alleviate the symptoms and stress, but from what I can see he stresses out much harder WITH the alcohol. It's no wonder because alcohol affects the central nervous system adversely. It's no problem for me to drop alcohol, I am just as happy without it.
So will he be able to go cold turkey on alcolol 100%? He wasn't that hard to put up with this week with no drinking, but was that because he was also on his best behavior, knowing how close he came to being sent back to his mom's? And again- should I just settle for "not being that hard to put up with" instead of Fabulous?
So again, he was in my constant presence for 3 days in a row(72 hours), one of those days being an event day so therefore a nasty OCD jerk with lots of crazy problems. I ended up going outside to talk to all my friends on the phone so that I could have privacy, walking around the neighborhood and sitting in my car wasting gas to put the charger on my phone. Thank god I have an unlimited minute plan. This just costs me so much time and energy. As I was walking around my neighborhood I saw so many people out enjoying the summer evening. People riding bikes, sitting on the porch talking, walking around and just being normal. I thought about my boyfriend sitting inside his room in the AC with the computer, avoiding all this life. He doesn't go talk to the neighbors. He didn't want a bicycle. He doesn't go for walks just for pleasure, unless it's something I want to do. He doesn't exercise. He just sits online in the AC because he says he overheats and he needs the AC all the time. God I wish I had been forwarned about this. This is so alien to me. How could someone just seclude themselves like this in processed air? I have always loved fresh air. I can't stand AC, but he is always overheating so he needs it. He has absolutely no interest in a single person in the neighborhood, either. There is just something so wrong about that.
My friend had a boyfriend who is a drug addict and she was able to find some kind of program for him to go to where they would let him live there and gave him free treatment, school, etc. I consider her so lucky because she was able to find a place where he could live and they would help him. Unfortunately, you have to be homeless before they will accept you to this program. Why is the USA like that? There is no help for my boyfriend who has a major problem that prevents him from being effective in the job world and relationships, but for a homeless drug addict there is room, board, treatment and free school. How does that work?
I'm starting to feel that I most definitely made the wrong decision and he should go back to his mom's, come what may. It is not my responsibility to support this guy. I wanted to be openhearted but it just leads to frustration, bitterness, resentment and anger to be saddled with something that is not my responsibility.
On the up side of things, I got a mani-pedi, bought my best skincare products once again, and lost weight/toned up on a new diet. I can now fit some clothes I had stopped being able to get into any more and that makes me feel better. Put out feelers to find a meditation class as well. Still got the bags under the eyes though from overwork and too much responsibility being on me, and dealing with my boyfriend. I made sure to call my friends and parents, cleaned up the apt and worked on paying some of my bills down. I hope to be caught up to where I was before all this started by Fall, wether he is still here or not.
