ct scans and mri

Can a ct scan or mri be done without contrast dye? Can they see the kidneys and whole ut system for stones or not. someone once told me that any of these two test are useless without the contrast dye. I happen to be allergic to contrast dye. How do they do the tests then.

The scans can be done without using contrast, but it's kind of like using sunglasses at night by comparison. Which dye has given you an allergic reaction? Most MRI dyes contain gadolinium, but there are other types of dyes used in CT and ultrasound. Perhaps they have some that you could tolerate. Dyes can be introduced orally, by injection or sometimes via enema

I have Chronic Kidney Stones, pass 4-6 per year, have had many CT's for Kidney Stones and I've never had to have Contrast Die. I also am allergic to it, but that's besides the fact. My Nephrologist has never asked for Contrast for Kidney Stone CT.

My Kidney's always have Stones in them and they show up just fine on a normal CT.

I can't have an MRI as my left knee is made of cadaver bone, screws and pins, so yeah, no big ass magnets for me.
