I've been on this website on and off for a few years and I don't think I've ever started a post. I feel like I need to now though, because I have come a long way, and it saddens me to read the posts on here and understand completely how people feel.
I used to be the jealous girlfriend. Horribly jealous. I wouldn't allow him to watch porn, to look at girls, to communicate with his ex (who he has a daughter with) via text - I controlled everything that I could in the relationship and it became a full-time job. My thoughts at work were consumed with what he was doing at that very moment. Who he was looking at. If he was wishing I looked like her. It was literally insane the amount of time I put into my jealousy. Checking his phone constantly, emails, internet history. Not being able to go to bars or clubs with him for fear of better looking women being around. Not leaving him in the house alone because I was afraid he would watch porn.
It was awful
And than one day it dawned on me that the only person I can truly control is myself. I was wasting so much time and energy on trying to control him, and fooling myself into beleiving that I actually was controlling him. But I really wasn't at all. I wasn't living my life for me, it was all for him. Everything I did was based on his reaction/action/viewpoint. I wasn't having fun and going out because I was afraid. I wasn't enjoying my time with him because I was accusatory...always wondering what he was doing behind my back.
The moment I gave up control and began doing things in my life for me, and only me, our relationship changed. I stopped drinking (I would drink every night just to escape), I started walking & working out, I started enjoying life more. He is now putty at my feet. Literally. The strength I have in myself now, has translated into confidence and independence to him, and it's attractive. That's all your man/woman wants - a confident, happy partner.
At the end of the day, if your partner chooses to leave/cheat/lie, etc, you will be left standing alone. That's the bottom line. You have to be ok alone before you can be ok in a relationship. You have to know that being together isn't life or death. You absolutely must work on yourself and your confidence FIRST before anything will ever get better in your relationship. You must stop relying on your partner for your happiness. YOU are in control of your happiness, and your life. Please believe me...fake it till you feel it if you have to, but your life will change when you change. He will change. And you will be so much better because of it.
I can't stress to you enough how FREEING it feels to just live my life, not caring about where he is and what he is doing, knowing without a shadow of a doubt that he loves me and is doing no wrong. And if by some awful chance he does do something wrong, well than it's his loss, because I'm a damn good catch. More importantly, my life will go on. He isn't my life.
I do have jealous thoughts every now and than, but the difference with these thoughts now is that they pass right on through. They don't linger. I don't obsess. It is what it is and I can't control what others will or won't do. That's it. I have made a promise to be happy and enjoy each day - life is so short, don't waste any more time being like this. Free your mind from the jail cell that you have trapped it in.
I promise you that I created a life of hell for myself for years, and I dug my way out of it. My old posts are proof...check them out. You can do it too.
I hope this post helps someone. I'm here if anyone needs to talk.

Great to have you back
Thats enough and I love him.
I am considering starting a Codependents Group on here. Maybe that is related with the jealousy too.
Did your partner feel off-balance when you started to be non-jealous? My partner seems o be feeling put into question as he is no longer the 'healthy' one. There is a shift in the power balance as I am being non-jealous and more independent, finding classes that suit my interests and needs and also spending more time within healing myself. Maybe I am a little distant. But I am transitioning between being a needy baby in his arms t cuddling my inner child in my own arms. Earlier when he would act mean or dismissive I would fight him i hurt and indignation for his love and approval and make him say sorry for being mean. He had much power to hurt me. Now I see it, I realize he is being really mean, I feel disappointed and I leave when h dismisses me. I am having to deal with feeling the humiliation and disconnection and tend to judge him instead. He is getting freaked out.
My independence seems to be leaving him to be more authentic and responsible for himself. Individuation may bring about separation anxieties. Did you experience any bumps like this on the way?
Yes I noticed a difference in his behavior when I changed mine. Of course he will feel "off" because all of a sudden this jealous insecure person is finding her strength and change is always difficult to deal with. At first he may become insecure himself, because he is used to you getting upset over things that now don't bother you. He might wonder what is wrong, or if there is someone else. I think that's normal - my therapist warned me about it and we did go through that a little bit. But he adjusted quickly. He is much happier when I am causing less drama. It's just a change that everyone needs to adjust to.
As far as the jerking off situation - if you read books on human needs, you will see that some men have a higher sex drive then others and do in fact need to 'release; more often. I will agree strongly that not every man needs to watch porn. That's a mental choice. The jerking off is a physical need for some though. It all depends on the libido and has nothing to do with their partner. It's the same for women. I know many women who's partner is not 'up to speed' with them, so they take it upon themselves sometimes to take care of things. It has nothing to do with their love for one another, not everyone is like this, and not everyone would want this in their relationship. We are all different, and have different ideas of what is wrong or right in a relationship. That doesn't make someone else's relationship wrong or right - we can't judge. If you aren't ok with it, then you aren't, plain and simple. If you are, then that's ok too.
It's all about what works for you and your partner.
JUst my two-cents...
Nybor - I'm not sure I can exactly say how this all came about. I guess the only way to explain it is that at some point I got so tired of constantly trying to control everything, and realized that all of the effort I am putting into the controlling really isn't making any difference, so why not just stop.
Now don't get me wrong, I had a jealous moment this morning and unfortunately opened my moutgh about it. Even as I was speaking I was telling myself to shut up...but I also wasn't listening to my rational self. So I kept speaking, he got annoyed, and it is what it is. Now I'm at work, and so is he, and later I will act as if nothing happened and we will move on.
In the past, I would carry things on and on and not let go. Even over the simplest things. So I'm still a jealous person, I'm a controlling person, and I'm human. I am getting better at managing my reactions and feelings, but I'm far from perfect. It's all about small improvements every day, and realizing that the set backs will pass if you allow them to.
Onwards and upwards!
