Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Support Group
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disorder that is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping, and constipation. Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.

I agree you should see a GI for an accurate diagnosis -- you don't want to let this go on should it be something more serious like Inflamatory Bowel Disease which can lead to surgery.
However, have you tried fiber therapy? It sounds as if you may have IBS-D as myself (and my 7-year old) and fiber therapy is very helpful for some. Myself included. I was on daily doses of Citrucel for years at it was the only thing that helped even things out. My 7-year old takes two teaspoons of Benefiber daily which also seems to help her -- although we're still in the process of trying to figure out what "trigger foods" she's got.
inthemiddle -- I understand your frustraion but even in a real disease of the colon, like Crohn's disease, stress plays a very real role. It would be nice to think that it doesn't -- but unfortunately it does. My oldest daughter is 10 and suffers from Crohn's disease. If she get's anxious or nervous about something -- she's easily in the bathroom more times than I can count.
Unfortunately for many of us, we keep stress internalized which in turn affects our entire GI tract (think ulcers, acid reflux, IBS even constipation). And yes it's tough to manage stress no matter what job you have or where you go to school or whatever your life may be like. But stress is a necessary evil that must be tackled in trying to gain control of most digestive problems. I know, I know -- that's easier said than done.
