First it would be good to clarify. If "no sleep in 3 weeks" isn't an exaggeration, then congrats your friend has just set the new world record, which previously was 11 days. In reality, I suspect your friend has slept quite a bit, just not as well as he'd like. Which is true for most of us with insomnia.
We do get some sleep, but tend to only pay attention the time spent in bed awake -- frustrated, angry, and tense -- trying to sleep. Which of course only makes it all worse.
Try googling something like 'cbt adult sleep training programs' and you'll likely find links to many good resources and programs using CBT.
And I agree CBT is the way to go. Drug free, and it works for most people.
