Infidelity Support Group
Any relationship in which one partner engages willfully in sexual relations with another outside of the partnership is considered to have experienced infidelity. This breach of trust is often traumatizing for the faithful partner as well as the relationship, and support is often needed to heal emotionally and to decide whether or not the relationship should continue after...
Hello, with my wife for 40 years, married for 35, cheated on for the last 15 plus. Saddest part, I knew about it all along. I can still see her going into the office to use the desk top computer for the first time and sending the email to an old friend. I can remember finding the silky panties hidden in the vanity drawer that first night she was going out to meet him under the guiese of going to meet her best girlfriend. I remember opening the text from him saying how he would meet her anywhere anytime but he must see her. And all this time, being lied to by the woman I loved for 25 years. Wait, it gets worse. After the text, I contacted a PI who setup two cameras in her car. He also gave me a GPS tracker to put in her pocketbook. They would infome me when she was traveling out of her normal routine but they refused to tell me where she would end up on those special days she went of course because they were worried about liability if I, well, you know, him. But, they would email me the pictures of what was being done in her car each time. Stills at first, then video. I never said a word about it that I had proof. I took the scumbag to lunch and I had all I could do not to lay him down on the trunk of his car and beat him till he stopped breathing. But, it wasn't him who was cheating on me. I had a face, and other body parts, and a name but I needed to put the face and the name together. I gave him a warning which he said he heard but as it turned out, he ignored.
For years, I knew it was still going on and I even got new pictures and video. This time I had my own camera because I couldn't afford the $100.00 per hour I was paying the PI. I also bought some spywear to retreive the text that were going back and forth and I had gotten all the emails from the home computer before my wife realized I could read them and told the D-Bag to use her work email. I was gathering all my ammunition and getting ready for the battle that I was sure was coming. I knew in my heart that my wife would be asking for a divorce and I was getting ready for war. I made two copies of everything so I could give his wife a complete package of everything I had collected over the years. Two complete files with emails, text, pictures, videos, and a travel log. Not to mention the pictures the PI's got of them when they were in the car in local parking lots during the day.
I was ready. I would look at the pictures and tremble. I would watch the videos and get sick form the anger going through me. I would let my wife know that I knew but kept the proof all to myself so she wouldn't know about it. I was hoping she would deny it in front of the judge and then I could have my lawer pass the folder to the judge so he could see what a liar she was. And then, I didn't care anymore. I would catch her in a lie and I would know when she was with him. She has 'Tells' and I knew them all.
Over the years I had some health problems which included some seriuos infections and each and everytime the doctors would ask if there was any possability of STD's I would answer, not on my part, but ask my wife. She was standing right there and said nothing and I knew she was lying. I knew she was having unprotected sex with this D-bag because I could see it in the pictures and the videos. But not a word from her and I would never give her up even when the doctors would ask again when she wasn't around. But, they were checking for everything so I knew that if it was an STD it would be found. Part of me hoped it would be related just to see the look on her face or hear the story that came out of her mouth.
For my 60th birthday last November, I told my wife that all I wanted from her was the truth about what she had been doing. To my surprise, she started telling me. Not the truth mind you at first, but at least admitted an affair for the first time. Of course, the first week was all BS. Then, I showed her a picture of her car parked at a hotel. She denied it was her car but you could see it in her eyes that she knew she had been caught. She sat on my lap and started the truth drip. Like pulling teeth to get the truth out of her and here we are 8 weeks later and the drip is still going on but she is coming clean finally.
Now, I am destroyed. Even though I knew it all these years. Even though I had pictures and videos. Hearing the words come out of her mouth has destroyed me like I have never been before. Now I'm lost. I'm empty. All feeling is gone. I have lost 40 pounds in 6 weeks. I can't get my mind off of this for any amount of time. I lost my father at a very young age and I got over that easier than I am getting over this. This is the first time I have mentioned any of this to anyone because of the forum being blind. I am not one who believes in therapy and I can't tell my friends because I don't want anyone to know what has been going on.
I won't go into details because you folks have all heard the same crap come of your cheaters mouths. But needless to say, she gave everything away over the years. She was in love with the scumbag and getting that out of her took 5 weeks. I don't want to tell his wife because I don't want to cause her the pain I am going through but this D-bag needs to pay a little something for what he did to his wife and his kids. They need to know what a POS he really is. But, I can't bring myself to drop a dime on him. My wife and this scumbag get away Scott Free from all of this. No consequenses for either of them.
My wife seems sorry. She seems to have remorse. She says she wants to work it out. But how the hell am I supposed to know after all the lies I've been told. I have no idea what is real and what is a lie. The only thing keeping me going is that we just welcomed our first grandchild in October and I have nicknamed him 'My Savior'. To be honest, I hope he is our Savior. I feel that she came clean finally because of him and she wants him to have an intact family to grow up in.
My wife ended the affair, she says. I have told the scumbag that if he contacts my wife again that he will not only see me in person again but I have his house number on speed dial.
So, that's my story folks. Sorry it's so long but I haven't found anybody else who has been through a 15 year affair so there's a lot to tell. I thank you for giving me a place to fianally tell someone else my story. I'm tired of writing a journal and letters that nobody ever sees but me.
Similar to you I decided to give her a second chance, as well with children being a factor.
Honestly, I'm not trying to fight you. When I first came on this site it was right after the fallout and I wasn't in a place to post. It was several months before my emotions were in check and I had gotten a good enough clarity to start posting and discussing rationally again.
The initial lack of sleep, turbulent emotions, and daily triggers puts us in a free fall where we are just grasping at any understanding of the situation that will bring us some temporary comfort to get through the day.
Anyway, another bad night. More triggers. I went outside and cleaned up the foot or so of snow we got yesterday after seeing things on TV and I was actually happy cleaning the driveway even though my mind was going the whole time. I'm getting to the point where I don't want to have the television on anymore. Am I to old to join a Monastery? I'm losing my hair anyway so shaving my head will be easier.
I have a new motto now, 'Actions speak louder than words and lack of actions says it all'. At home with my wife yesterday and there were no attempts for anything. This was the first time since all this happened that we didn't go to bed together and I stayed downstairs all night. First time we're not talking to each other. I thought it would get easier as time passed but here I am at the two month mark and still on the damn rollercoaster. I didn't expect it to be over, just hoped it would be better than D-day.
You always had a basic understanding how morally bankrupt Hollywood industry was and more so now with all the scandals but...
After D-day I notice how much adultery is used as a plot twist or sometime the whole premise of shows/movies.
The sad part is that it does not demonize it but rather brush the consequences and heart under the rug or at least minimalize it.
Though you can't be surprised as the Hollywood divorce/remarriage rate optically seems much higher than the general population. ( I don't know if it really is)
We screen triggery movies and TV shows but it's hard to avoid complete due to my initial point.
Triggers will come less often and affect you less over time.
And those are the people who actually sign up to be there for whatever reason, some perhaps to try to change and others perhaps for an audience. So yeah, its an interesting comparison looking at CS and BS. I don't recommend the newly betrayed go pain shopping over there. If you chime in and its not the sort of response they were looking for, you'll be labeled a bitter bunny etc bc, the banner clearly cautions you to play nice or your post will be deleted, LOL. Meanwhile, there are no such protections in place here because after all some CS are really timid forest creatures and we have to be considerate of their feelings and us BS, well we are expected to suck it up!
Triggers. Ugh. Where shall I begin? Esther Perel (unlicensed "therapist") and the whole "you deserve to explore your own happiness" bullish%t. Matt Lauer, former Gov Bentley, Anthony Weiner, David Letterman, Tiger Woods, Meg Ryan, LeAnn Rimes, Tori Spelling. They are everywhere. The sheer saturation of cheaters in everyday life is having an effect of numbing the world to the problem of cheating. It is becoming normalized. Movies, TV programs, commercials. No where is it accurately portrayed in terms of the harm caused and damage done to the BS.
Do pay attention to the actions vs words mismatch. It is something I have learned the very very very hard way to do. We all want to hope and to believe. No one wants to be fooled again though.
I'm starting to have more better than worse days. But the innocent happiness is gone if our relationship.
For sure actions say it all. I needed to stay for my son so I knew I tried /we tried for him. And so far in glad I did but we still have a long way to go. The trust is gone.
Boundaries are important it's clear he's out the door if anything happens again. That's an important boundary to set for our CS. Good luck to you.
Anyway, forward progress seems to be being made. A very slow and agonizing process at times. There are bumps along the road and there are even setbacks but it feels like it's moving forward.
Do the questions ever stop coming up? I know there are no answers for so many of them but they still seem to pop into my head constantly out of nowhere. Often they are from an answer to a previous question when the answers made no sense and sometimes it will be a whole new subject. But damn, they just keep coming.
Stay strong folks. Remember, move forward, together or alone, but keep moving forward.
But it seems to me that you enabled her for 15 years and in doing so, delayed her "hitting rock bottom" considerably. This is no different than by turning a blind eye to a spouse's destructive drug or alcohol abuse, not holding them accountable for their actions, eliminating the negative consequences and then wondering why they continue to drug and drink.
I guess it takes all kinds...
A drug addict will get their drugs no matter what. An alcoholic will get their drink no matter what. As I stated, I am not with my wife 24/7 and could not possibly keep an eye on her constantly. The staple of a cheating spouse is lying. They lie in every action they take. Why would you think that threatening them will suddenly turn them honest? Many of them just become better liars and continue on their merry cheating way.
For me, leaving my wife and family was not then, and is not now an option that I care to choose. My wife made a terrible decision a long time ago and finally realized it now. I HOPE! Time will tell.
Is your husband a smart man? Do you think he knew when he first started cheating that there was a possibility that you would divorce him? Or that he would lose his family? And, did he do it anyway? So tell me, how did the idea of negative consequences keep your husband from cheating? My guess is they didn't.
You don't force a drug addict or an alcoholic to hit rock bottom. Something happens that makes them want to change. For some it may be the threat of losing their family. But usually, it's that they finally see the person they have become and don't like what's staring back in the mirror It is not always easy to see or even known to anyone else but themselves. And by the way, not to many of them stop on their first try either just as so many of these infidelity stories have attested to.
My wife just walked out the door to go to work. I will be here hoping that she goes to work, does her job for the day and returns home to me this evening. I will hope that she doesn't get a phone call, an email or a text from the D-Bag. I will hope that she doesn't leave work and meet up with him for lunch or a quickie, or both. Just like you Cora, I will hope. That is, unless you divorced your husband already. Because after all, if you threaten consequences then you have to follow thru with them or their meaningless.
You're right, it takes all kinds.
If you look at the first page of the posts, I tried to cover what you posted already.
In any sense cheaters do not think logically, they think emotionally.
Someone to relies on their emotions to make decisions would have difficulty looking at themselves in the mirror while doing quite evil things over a long span of time.
The only option to avoid insanity is to twist your thinking and justify everything you've done with mental gymnastics.
You wife has been solidifying these mental pathways for 15 years and it will take a long long time to detangle her thoughts and beliefs.
In the book "The Picture of Dorian Gray" the main character does horribly evil things but his face always look beautiful while a portrait of him ages and becomes more demonic looking. Dorian hides the picture away because he can't stand looking at his inner self.
After D-day the process of having a adulterous spouse come clean and be open about everything is like forcing them to stare at the picture of themselves and admit who they really are underneath.
It is their own doing and the consequences of their own decisions/actions but you can still have an understanding on how difficult this must be.
It is a violent tearing off of their treasured mask and identify and exposing darkness inside them for all to see including themselves.
You see celebrities and politicians who break down and sometimes commit suicide after being exposed for a crime. The shame is too much for some to bear.
I see a woman who wants to work this out. I see a woman who is dealing with her actions and with the damage she has done. Not quite as much as I am but she is damaged too nonetheless. 10 weeks or so is not a long time in this episode of our lives together. It has been marked by many highs and many lows on both of our parts.
Hindsight is a bitch! I do wish I had done some things different. I believe my wife wishes she had done things differently too. But we didn't, and now we are dealing with those choices. Like so many others on this forum, we all are doing the best we can and hoping that we made the right choices for us.
We can't change what happened. How it happened. When it happened. Or for how long it happened. That ship has sailed. All we can do is try to keep moving forward and have hope that we made the right decisions for us right now and in the future. Couples overcome this and I feel those couples are the strong ones. It doesn't work for all couples and for them the choice is easier and often less painful. It's more work to try and rebuild. Takes more effort. But hopefully it's worth the effort in the long run. Time will tell.
You don't bring a starving person to a buffet and in the same way you can't just pull back the veil all at once. You have to deal with the shame and remorse in bit sized portions.
The important thing is that the cheating spouse is willing to slowly look deeper and deeper into their past actions, decisions, and identity.
There are some who stop at a point and go no further as it is too painful and shameful to look any deeper.
Some just hide away their true self back into attic and never deal with it. Those who do this just tell themselves the whole affair was just a mistake unrelated to their character/beliefs and that they will make better choices going forward.
The problem is that we depend on our character and beliefs to guide our choices and decisions.
Just keep at it and if you both are 100% onboard towards change/healing then you are better off than the majority that won't make it.
I mean no disrespect, I just have questions.
Despite your assumptions about me, I do not have any experience with infidelity. I do, however, have plenty of experience with drug and alcohol addiction. You made the comparison between cheaters and addict/alcholics; I am merely exploring your comparison.
You are correct; mere threats will not suddenly make the cheating spouse honest, nor will threats make an addict/alcoholic suddenly quit using and drinking. The "idea of negative consequences" will rarely make anyone change their behaviors. It is the making good on threats, the reality of negative consequences that cause many to change their harmful and destructive ways and seek honest, healthy behavior and interactions with others.
Regardless of the destructive behavior (cheating or drug/alcohol abuse, etc), until the negative consequences are truly felt, there is little to no motivation to make any changes. And by not bringing forth negative consequences, the affected partner continues to enable the behavior. In fact, perhaps endorses or even condones the destructive behavior.
And to forwardmotion, not being forced to face negative consequences may actually keep the individual from having to face the mirror and acknowledge the evilness of their nature. If no one makes me look at the mirror, guess what? I don't look in the mirror.
But thank you for clarifying that you have no experience with what people on this forum are going through and thank you for at least agreeing that the behavior, between the two issues is a fair comparison. Which is what I did say in the first place, right?
You have no idea of everything that went on or goes on in my marriage. Everybody on this forum has their own story and their own reasons for doing what they do. I can't write out all that took place in the past 40 years of my relationship with my wife so all you get is one little snapshot of what went on around my house during a period of time for whatever reasons. Don't presume you know very much about us, you don't.
Everybody has to look in the mirror someday, whether they care to or not. That is when people start to take stock in what they were and what they have become. It is also when they decide what they want to be from here on out. You can't force that even by acting on negative consequences. Some face prison and will still do what they are doing because they want to. Hell, some face death and still continue. How many junkies overdose more than once?
