I know many of you are struggling out there with the expense of fertility treatments and health insurance that covers little to nothing.

You may be able to write off some of your expenses on your taxes. Check out this site: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/index.html.

"Fertility Enhancement

You can include in medical expenses the cost of the following procedures to overcome an inability to have children.

Procedures such as in vitro fertilization (including temporary storage of eggs or sperm).

Surgery, including an operation to reverse prior surgery that prevented the person operated on from having children."

I have saved all my receipts and am going to ask my RE's office if they can print out everything I've paid in 2008 and taking it to our CPA to see if that will provide some relief.

Thanks,, I am also using all my gas receipts and my hotel stays( I have to stay for 19 days in Spokane during IVf) and even my food bill for my stay there.

I've lost some of my receipts from the past year but when I had my u/s on Monday, I asked the lady in the financial department if I could get a printout of the entire year and shw said yes, that would be no problem. We wrote off our treatment from last year too but this year is going to be a LOT more.

Keep in mind that there are income limits to the deduction, but my CPA had my DH and I file seperately (you don't have to file joint just because you are married) and since my income was so much less then DH, I could take the full deduction. Have your CPA run the taxes both ways, it might be worth it to file seperate! We've upped our refunds the last two years by filing seperate.

Can you file separately, even if you've always filed jointly? I made more money this year than DH. I wish HE could claim all my expenses. Hmmm...time to call my CPA!

You can believe we're deducting as much of the 51,000 we've spent this year. At least with a refund we might be able to start looking into other options. I HATE THE MONEY ASPECT OF THIS! Those lucky enough with insurance are...well, lucky :)

I had never considered the idea of filing separately. I make less than DH, so maybe that would be smarter. I don't have a CPA, just me and TaxCut :)

Also keep receipts for travel, lodging, food, bridge toll, etc...

I had to travel 5 and half hours to my IVF doc and had to stay in the area for 2 weeks.

Keep in mind, you may deduct only the amount by which your total medical care expenses for the year exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You do this calculation on Form 1040 Schedule A in computing the amount deductible.

I'm in the process of running the numbers. Don't forget prescriptions, most pharmacies will give you a printout.

I was able to write off everything last year. Meds, IVF etc... Got back quite a tidy sum. It sure helped me be able to continue

Don't forget mileage (although it's only .19/mile - we'll take every little bit we can get). And look over the list at the IRS website, there's some things you wouldn't necessarily think of - like contact solution and bandages (even though you can't count over the counter meds and lots of other things - doesn't make much sense to me, but it is the government afterall). Don't forget any dental and vision bills - including glasses and contacts. If there's anything you need or need to get done and you know you're over your 7.5%, now is the time. If you have a prescription for massage or acupunture (so you can show it was for a medical reason - not a luxury), you can also count those appointments and the mileage to get there.

P.S. If you got your meds from out of country I don't think you can add those.

    Is anyone here allergic to Sulfa that is currently taking Diamox? I have been diagnosed with IH now for almost 2 years. I am allergic to Sulfa drugs meaning that my throat will swell up so my Neurologist put me on Topamax. I was suffering from major loud whoosing noises and the topamax helped that but everyday I still hear those mainly between 6 - 12 pm. I am at my wits end and have not went...
