2007 was my first year doing fertility treatment. In Canada it is possible to claim medical expenses not covered by insurance. I figured I call and ask Revenue Canada exactly what can be claimed and what can't be claimed. The Canada Revenue agent was as bright as a burnt out light bulb. First she informed me that the information is on the web. This is what the website states as covered, "In vitro fertility program, not including donations to a sperm bank."
What does that mean - I asked the agent and of course she counldn't tell me. So I am wondering if anyone has used an agency such as H&R block to complete their tax returns and if they found the service satisfactory.

In the US, the requirement is that the expenses be at lease 7.5% of your adjusted income. So, we couldn't file medical expenses. Sucks!!!

We were able to deduct our medical expenses this year, as for 2007 we spent about 20K. They didn't ask for anything specific, but of course we have ALL of our receipts.

Not sure about Canada, but in the U.S. you can also deduct mileage and lodging associated with medical care.

I think I could claim mileage if I went to a clinic out of town becasue they offered a service not available locally. I am definitely going to find out more about that. Its hard to believe that so many couples go through infertility treatment and there seems to be no clear indication on what is deductible or not. You'd think the clinics would be able to point you in the right direction but there is no info.

We go to a tax attorney every year and it costs $150 but is so worth it. Here in the US, I guess our expenses need to come to over 7.5% of your gross income so DH and I won't qualify but I have a file of everything we paid in 2007 for IF treatments and I am bringing it with me when we get our taxes done anyway to see if there is something he can do.

My DH and I spent over $30,000 on IVF. We file separately so I think I am going to write it off on my end. My accountant said we could under medical.

Thanks for the info. I am definitely going to have to hire a consultant because I can't find any straight forward answers to my questions.

I am allergic to Sulfa drugs meaning that my throat will swell up so my Neurologist put me on Topamax. I was suffering from major loud whoosing noises and the topamax helped that but everyday I still hear those mainly between 6 - 12 pm. I am at my wits end and have not went...
