I am one who will out right tell someone- No, i don't have kids. and when they say something stupid like 'well you better get on that" or "do you want kids?" then I tell them that we are medically unable to have children. I always love the follow up statements of "adopt" or "gods plan" and I can then embarrass them into shutting up by going in to our disbelief of their God and the financial/emotional issues behind adoption. It is my hope to get them to realize they need to THINK before saying these kinds of things to people. I used to be one who would just say we'll see and walk away but i know how much that HURT me and how much i AGONIZED over that conversation the rest of that day or more...and i want to do whatever i can to alleviate that stress for someone else. You NEVER know what others are going through and I NEVER ask someone when they are having kids etc. If I can make others more sensitive to that, but have to embarrass them a little to do it, so be it. They used to embarrass me by asking so now i think turnabout is fair play.
hope that doesn't sound too mean of a strategy but its all that i have found that works for me. its a way to cope and deal.
