When I chatted with my RE it sounded like removing tubes prior to IVF is a relatively new thing in the US. Many European countries spend more money on IF and so more studies and research are done. My uncle a specialist in radiology even tried to discourage me from removing my tubes because he had never heard it before!
I am sorry both of you have to have more surgery :( I HATE surgery! Lol I am glad I can give you guys hope :) I totally agree about the artificial tubes or why not tubal transplants? You think with medical advances this would have been done already!
Anyway, keep me posted tgratton and endowife on how things go for you both. You will be in my prayers!
Katie
The deal with the no tube replacement is that the follicles that transport the egg to the uterus r too difficult to replicate. Of course I had to ask this too.
I'm hoping they'll be in communication this week so I can arrange my surgery soon. The sooner the better to get it done n move forward. My husband told me to try and think of my tubes like tonsils, they aren't needed anymore. I think having a successful IVF after having our tubes out will make us feel more womanly than ever :) Roarrr!!
I have bilateral hydrosalpinx and had bilateral partial salpingectomy (sp?) a few years ago before starting IVF. (have not had luck with IVF but that is a separate story). The surgery wasnt bad, few days of light duty afterwards.
The fluid from hydros are pretty well documented to be bad for implantation. (if you need journal articles to back it up, PM me). I cant believe your RE put you through 4 IVFs without suggesting it. Makes me really mad. I am sorry for all you have been through! I hope that you will have success afterwards!!
I had left hydrosalpinx and right partial occlussion. I was told what this meant in about ten different ways and if I hadnt been very onto it and super confident to just ask the doctor what I wanna know I would probably be in the same boat as doodles having had numerous IVF cycles or in the same boat as endowife with multiple surgeries behind me.
After a HSG which looked like free flowing dye on one side I was told to start with, one tube was good, then it was described as hydrosalpinx,Then my fertility specialist rang me to tell me I qualified for IVF and I could go on the list....I put two and two together and decided I must have bad enough chances of concieving to qualify so I took myself to the doctor to get it all explained who said the other one is also obscured...........eghhh, odds pretty bad!!!
Since the multiple different ways it was explained to me when the specialist suggested a laparoscopy to have a better look I jumped at the chance, really, hoping they were wrong the first time!!
I then Googled hydrosalpinx and found a lot of scary stuff about toxic fluid which freaked me out, when I saw my surgeon I asked her about the toxic fluid ruining chances of IVF like I had read. She wasnt sure and had to ring my fertility specialist to confirm. I then suggested myself that she could clip the tube so I had no wasted cycles of IVF.
Obviously at this point I hoped the Lap would reveal I had one good tube and the clip would just make my uterus hospitable.
As it happened though, the sugeon decided while she was inside that both tubes were blocked enough to be better clipped to prevent ectopic pregnancy.
So I came out Sterile!!!
I know where you are at, as I had top sign consent for the surgeon to clip both tubes if necessary.
I guess the only way to think of it is that if it had worked anyway they wouldnt have clipped it, so in reality I am not more infertile than I was when I went under the anaesthetic...........just fully aware of it and better placed for IVF.....????
Love to keep up to date with your surgeries if you are keen x x x
Big hugs
Welcome to the club Nedico! I hope u r recovering well. When do u begin IVF post surgery?
Alicat, a big part of me feels wronged but I'm moving forward for now and hoping for the best.
The IVF is due to start in August 2013 just because thats when i get to the top of the list.
@Nedico, my multiple surgeries were with reason. The first was for a miscarriage, and the second was for an ovarian cyst which turned out to also be an ectopic pregnancy. I have endometriosis which caused the wonky tubes.
We are now part of the wonky tube club. Ok, let's vow to join in friendship. I also vow to feel excitment when you become pregnant (even if I am not), to be the voice of reason when other posts make us cry (someone just posted how 'on never really gives up trying to conceive.' and I just thought: no. doesn't work that way for us. either we are trying with IVF, or we are not!!), and to be someone to keep your eye in the correct direction (baby-bound!!).
We can do it.
I will definately be following all your stories and I will only ever be happy for people who get their happy ending, afterall thats what were all hoping for and it certainly gives us all more hope.
I see to the left of here that you can set up member groups, perhaps we should do that??
The only upsetting thing is they found 2 cysts, one on each ovary, and some endo. I know it is not possible to complete an IVF cycle if cysts form and this means I have had at least 4 cysts form in the last year.
I know cysts are common with endo, but it is a bummer to hear the news. My hubbie is very sweet and reminded me that we could still try natural cycle IVF if the drugs over stimulate and cause cysts instead of embryos.
Tgratton - how are you feeling, 2 days later?
Nedico - how are you feeling? Do you still have bleeding? The discharge papers said I could have 6 weeks of spotting and that I should wear day pads constantly. But the discharge papers are for all of his patients, including the hysterectomies. Are you still bleeding? I don't remember that from before.
Pss I keep thinking, what am I going to do with my scars? I was never a tattoo person, but I am seriously considering an Om symbol over my bigger scar - post baby. :-)
Crazy, or kinda fun?
I see the fertility doc on Thursday. :-)
Agree, at 1.5 days post surgery, I magically felt better. Man, what a difference since my emergency lap. I am doing soooo much better.
So, I guess the next stop is to relax as much as possible before starting IVF. How are you doing?
In regards to recovery, I'm doing good. Turning on side at night can be a little painful n I'm worried about pulling on my internal stitches n internal bleeding. I've only taken Motrin since Saturday. My appt w OBGYN isn't till 10/19 bc he's on vacay. Idk when I'll b able to resume ivf. I'm assuming nov or dec. I have 2 twice frozen embies left from last cycle that we'll try first.
I began reading a book called little bee; so far it's good. Dh bought the video game resident evil 6 which is co-op so we've been killing a lot of zombies :) and, today I'm going to try and do some light housework and baking. How r things w you?
