I had HPV in 1980 and got cervical cancer, had it removed. Several years later I had a hysterectomy due to other female problems. This year I had an abnormal APA and guess what? HPV again!!! The doc said I could have carried it all these years and then maybe got it since. WOW I was so blown away.
Now had treatment and hoping it will go away again but I will always have to be checked for it. CRAZY!!

HPV is a virus like chickenpox...once you have it does stay in your body however after treatment it may NEVER come back again or it may resurface at times of stress. I had problems when I was preg. and again when I was going through my divorce. One must get reg. check ups and paps to detect any signs that it is causing cancer (it's the cancer that gets you if untreated ...not the HPV)

I understand from my dermatologist this evening who removed my warts surgically...the HPV can diminish and weaken overtime in your system. But does not go away. Just can stay dormant...even for good.

This is to Molly Malone's post, which I think is great, and sensible. My doctor has told me to wait and watch (I have CIN 2). I've spent the first 2 months worrying about this, and now I'm trying to take control and get healthy by eating lots of veggies (esp. the cruciferous ones), exercising everyday, acupuncture once a week, and sleeping. I don't know how I can "handle" stress (I'm in grad school), but I'm going to start by trying not to worry about this. I see a gynecological oncologist whom I trust, and if he's OK waiting till any surgery, then I should be too!
It's so important to do what Molly said -- to spend the time trying to get healthy and focusing on that instead of being scared.

I'm not a doctor, but mine said it goes dormant.....sort of like chicken pox, so that you don't get it again. That's what he told me anyway.

I don't have the high risk strain, and with supplements my symptoms are gone and have been for months. I don't think I would feel good about myself if I ever considered myself cured, I am going to continue to take my supplements, and if I ever meet someone I am going to tell them about it. It is treatable and from what I have heard the doctors on utube say as long as its treated it is seldom life threatening. And that the risk of giving it to someone else reduces the longer you are symptom free. Two months was a long time for me, but I have heard people with eighteen months symptom free still unsure if its long enough to not pass it on. Either way I still feel undatable, I guess I don't believe that no matter how common this is or how treatable, I will be considered disgusting. But I would rather be honest than disgusting for living in denial thinking I'm cured.

HPV is actually a really misunderstood. I had an issue a few years back- I had precancerous cells but tested negative for HPV. My doctor said most people who are sexually active get it sometime in their life. She said most times people never even know they have it. It mostly goes away on its own after awhile. It can cause pre-cancerous cells for both men and women. They actually suggest a shot against it now for teens (both men and women). It does not mean or sure you have or will have cancer but it can increase chances.

My cells are changing and they are watching to make sure it doesn't turn to cancer. I also have warts.
