Hi due to adhd is the reason I homeschool my 13 teen. He is smart and very brilliant, it seems the work is too easy for him and get's bored easily. Socializing don't worry, that is something you will work day by day, libraries, museums, parks as well.

We joined a local home school support group which is spearheaded by our church. They meet once a week, every Friday and our child gets to socialize with kids his own age who are also being home schooled.

After homeschooling for 18 years we have found that STILL the #1 question is socialization. Think about it what is socialization? You want your child to get along with others but in a school setting they are setting a standard that you have to be with people your own age. True socialization is getting along with people who are older and younger. In the job setting your co-workers are not your age, there are older and younger. In the home you do that. You get involved with other groups and do events together. You do community service to help others. Skills are learned that they will use the rest of their lives. Our boys had each other, the kids at church and the friends they made when they participated with homeschool sports, music and drama. Our oldest son who is 26 was in basketball. Many of those who he played with and against are his friends today. Our youngest son was in drama during his high school years. He is VERY popular. Our 3rd son went to high school classes for computer and would sit and visit with the bus driver during his ride which is unheard of really. The bus driver LOVED it cause none of the kids talked to her. Later when one kid accused him of something he did wrong the bus driver stuck up for him because of the friendship he had developed just by asking her how her day was going. So don't get stuck in the trap that they have to be with kids on their "peer" level. Your child can get involved with events with people from all different ages.

I have to agree with the other replies. There are many aspects to socialization. We are somewhat concerned, However that my grandson interacts with peers enough. He has been home schooled since October this year. So far he has done quite well. Since he is fifteen he has a few best friends. We do make an effort to encourage sleep overs walks and movies on weekends. I agree there are many cultural activities to be found by searching the internet. My primary thought is the negativity that seems to accompany public school. My grandson went to his first school dance before he started homeschooling and proceeded to tell us over ten girls asked him to dance and were rubbing in a sexual manner against him. He seemed to think this was normal. My daughter, husband and I feel this is quite sad. Brandon is doing extremely well with his studies and will start college much sooner.

The age old question. Many HSers join up with a group of other HSers for social events such as holiday parties, park days, field trips, etc. Google around and I'm sure you can find something. It's also where the adults can talk to other HS parents.

We do a lot of teams. I found bowling leagues to be helpful because my son prefers individual sports but it allows him to have time to develop friendships. When I meet a really nice boy I encourage the friendship by
Having the boy over or taking them out together.

Socialization... I have heard so many people tell me that they would have never guessed that I was homeschooled because I could interact well with people. I have watched those in public, private, and homeschooled and have come to the conclusion that it really doesnt matter where someone is schooled. It mostly matters on a persons personality. I know several people that went to public and private school that were more unsocial than those I homeschooled with. Most of my friends that homeschooled held jobs, did 4-H on club, county, district, and state levels, and anything else we could get our hands on, while those that "went to" school we couldnt get out of the house. But like I said it really depended on the person and their personality.

most of the time there are homescooling groups you can join to help with socialization. my daughter stays in contact with most of her friends. they do things after school or on the weekends

2 thoughts: 1) See if there is a local home school group. When I home schooled my son, our group had lots of activities...(organized by the parents) field trips, skating parties, book sales, etc.
2) I always got tons of compliments on my son and how he was able to 'relate' to every age group, babies to seniors. This is much better than just hanging with their peers!! He is now a very well adjusted adult.
