How to change our using salt to Lower BP
honeygirl70
Hello! I'm new to this group and I'm glad to be here with you all because I'm dealing with HBP as well. My issues started when I started to gain weight. I'm 5'6 or 5'61/2 and i'm about 230 in weight. I'm over weight for my height. I don't know if any of you know what weight you are suppose to be for your height but if you don't know that is the first step in getting in control of your BP. You may not feel that you are too heavy or look too heavy but your body knows that is why we get symptoms. Try to remember when you first realized you had HBP or that same headache that comes on after eating that hot dog or whatever it is. What I'm saying is that their were warning signs before you found out you had high HBP. Your body was saying slow down, don't eat that extra piece of pie or don't put hot sauce on that chicken that you just put all that seasoning on. So now you have HBP. If you have gain weight get it off. I know some people don't like to exercise but if you want to have LPB you have to probably exercise for the rest of your life. Second If you use seasoning salt or salt on your foods don't use condiments and if you are going to use condiments don't season your food. Why? Because of the extra salt we use. Especially African-Americans which use a lot of seasons and then turn around and drown our food with hot sauce or mild sauce, etc.. that is why we have it more than any other race. It is the way we cook. People change your cooking. Third get rid of can goods. We used them for years because it was cheap and you don't have time to cook from scratch anymore like grandma used to do. Well used frozen foods. they have less salt than Can goods. Frozen is the best next thing to fresh cooking. If you have to use can goods then rinse with water. It will get rid of some of the salt. When boiling your foods you can see all the salt in the water. After boiling pour it out and rinse off with water again. Keep a lot of Mrs Dash and use Kosher salt or Himalayan salt. The crystals are so big you only need a pinch of salt. See using the other salt ans they are so tiny you end up using more of it. Next do hot yoga. Hot yoga is yoga with 80- 90 degree temperatures and you will sweat out all the salt in your body and fat off your body. I do it and it works I tell you. You have to continue to drink water while you are doing it and and after your session so you won't get dehydrated. You will feel so good. No pain No gain. It is tough but it works people and you will find yourself without the headaches the extra weight and your pressure will go down. Drink a lot of tea people, Green, Oolong tea,etc... they lower blood pressure. Also, if water is hard for you to drink because it is for me by it self sometimes make cucumber water with a pinch of mint leaves, or cucumber and lemon, put strawberries in the water and it flavors it. Strawberry and KIWI is good. If you have a PInterest acct. Look mine up under hmm hmm good! or hmm hmm still good! there are all types of healthy drinks you can make and recipes. People your internal Med Doc does not specialized in BP. they are just going to keep given you more meds or different types of meds. I worked in the pharmacy before they get kick backs from the pharmaceutical companies to get you to take their medicine. Why are you all taking three an four pills a day? My grandma died and she was taking at least 7 or more pills a day. It is ridiculous. You wonder why you don't get better. the Pharmaceutical company is a billion dollar industry. Look it up. I know some of you are sett in your ways and you just have to take your pills and that is fine I understand because habit s are hard to break and I don't want anyone I mean anyone jeopardizing their life. Everyone has different issues concerning their blood pressure so make sure what ever decision you decide to make you can handle it and if not sure go to a doctor who believes in natural remedies and it REAL AND LICENSED. No phonies. But from experience you know your body so pay attention to it and I hope a little what I said on this board will help you all. Believe it or not their are a lot of people out their getting off this medication. You have to work at it and want it. Imagine if all the people with HBP didn't have it anymore? That would be beautiful and no more Billion dollar industry. Hey I'm Just saying.

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

From basic research I've done I've found
"Doctors" who get their degrees from private organisations and then they all endorse each other to make it look as if they are legit
There is no proper control of "natural" medications, at least not in the US. Even so the light regualtions that do exist have been frequently broken.
I see potentially dangerous "medications" being offered with no doctor supervision via the net
Studies for herbal remdies that show 40% don't even contain what the "active ingredient" was supposed to be. Lots that contained a number of other noxious ingredients which look as if they originated from other plants growing in the same fields.
The reason why these things are not regulated in the US is because in the 90s when an attempt was made the multi-million natural suppliment industry lobbied and blitzed people with a ridiculous scare tactics advertisment campaign.
I don't unstand why people trust unregulated, often unqualified and unsupervised people more than those that have been trained. Why they trust products which are unregulated and untested over those that are.
And remember, in other countries the relationship with big pharma is different. Governments set prices outside of the US and there are no kickbacks. Even so in other countries they prefer proper meds over natural suppliments.
I am supposed to avoid salt substitues and potassium I think...it was a long time ago I read the paper that came with it.
I am not implying that Mrs. Dash, etc, is one of those. Because it is just fine and I use it too.
just wanted to add to conversation/
also lemon juice for certain things, can be used.
I just happened to learn something about the Hawthorn Berry plant the other day and am intrigued......though after acuriousfish wrote the post about supplements I hesitate to bring it up. But is supposed to be good for all kinds of BP issues and other heart disease . I am not one to immediately believe such a claim, however. I do not take these things lightly. I only supplement with well studied herbs & supplementation. (and standardized ) Such as fish oil, flaxseed oil, Vitamin D.....Ginger, Turmeric etc.
I thought I had heard a different reason as to why African Americans have high BP more often ...I can't recall what that was, but I don't think it was entirely from diet. Though I have to agree with you the diet they often enjoy makes things worse. Especially in the Southern U.S.
thank you for the idea to look up those flavored waters on Pinterest ! Sometimes I see ideas on tv like that and then can't recall , so I will bookmark your suggestions on there...
I have been finding more & more things on that site, that I like. I myself started doing some things with water this past summer, like adding cucumber. all the things you mentioned are a great idea. I know some people put watermelon in their water as well. I also use a mix with no calories, of green tea, that Snapple makes....it helps me a lot to drink more.
I prefer an MD with training in alternative medicine to get the best of both worlds. I like it when my doctor says, "Western medicine would suggest this, the homeopathic remedy is this and natural medicine says that" and then she provides her insights and we decide on the best course of treatment together.
Yes, the natural treatment industry is also selling something so it's important to do your research. But while they're selling a tea for $2.50 for 24 bags, big pharma is selling pills for $35/each. I also rarely hear "If you don't take vitamin D3, you're going to die of a heart attack!!!"
That study was done about herbal remedies not containing the active ingredient had to be recalled because it wasn't true.
My doctor (has her MD from Yale and a bunch of certifications in alternative medicine) is suggesting I take fish oil, CoQ10, Primrose oil, Hibiscus tea, magnesium, epsom salt baths and meditation. Also interval training for exercise. For food, I can have Himalayan pink salt, ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, veggies, 4 - 8 ounces of meat and I'm to limit severely all sugars and carbs.
We'll see if it goes down with that and if not, we'll consider Hawthorne or some other options.
