The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.

It is believed that the Hepatitis C virus has evolved over a period of several thousand years.

This would explain the current general global patterns of genotypes and subtypes:

1a - mostly found in North & South America; also common in Australia

1b - mostly found in Europe and Asia.

2a - is the most common genotype 2 in Japan and China.

2b - is the most common genotype 2 in the U.S. and Northern Europe.

2c - the most common genotype 2 in Western and Southern Europe.

3a - highly prevalent here in Australia (40% of cases) and South Asia.

4a - highly prevalent in Egypt
4c - highly prevalent in Central

Africa
5a - highly prevalent only in

South Africa
6a - restricted to Hong Kong,

Macau and Vietnam
7a and 7b - common in Thailand
8a, 8b & 9a - prevalent in

Vietnam
10a & 11a - found in Indonesia

Genotype 1a and last viral load about a year ago was about 4 million.

Was undetectable after first round of treatment about 5 years ago but relapsed six months later and haven't been able to clear it since.

for genotype 3's does it matter a or b? my husb's dr never said whether it was a or b, he just said 3. he also has never told us a viral load # other than undetectable at wk4. should i be asking for this #?

what the...?! up to 11a?! Oh my, I am not going to China, Macau, Vietnam, or Indonesia. Are those higher numbered ones more contagious? Are they harder to beat?

My VL is only two hundred and fourteen! My genotype can't even be determined yet! If it increases at my next visit then I guess I didn't sporadically clear and will do tx at that time.

My appointment with GI isnt untill apri 17th, I just dont like being in the dark about this. It seems very odd to have a vl like that with all the research I have done. We will see thought! I will keep all of you posted! Good podt.

Be patient with our doctor hun. I know it is hard to wait but hand in there. We are all praying for good results for you.Your doing what you can. When you get the results us ladies should all meet at the fishin hole. Your in my prayers for the best. Stay strong and don't let no one get you down.
