Hepatitis C Support Group
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
I drank most of my HCV filled years, and had no scarring on my liver and mod inflammation.
But that said, I've lived a pretty much healthy lifestyle. I choose to eat more whole fresh foods rather than prepackaged instant meals. Eat most of my meals from home, get regular exercise and am a non smoker.
I take rx meds only on rare occasions when needed and spend most of my time breathing in clean air from the country.
I did not drink on tx, and now enjoy occasional adult beverages post tx. But I did use 420 on the last half of my tx, to ease my sides, and still enjoy on occasion.
It is one's own call. You know your health better than we do. Everyone has different opinions and I'm not telling anyone what they should or should not do or which choices to make. I'm only stating what works for me.
That said, when I was dx with HCV, I did limit my alcohol, to a glass of wine on occasion. My DR informed me it was not going to hurt my liver, but he did recommend a more organic natural life style, limiting red meats. (He's a bicycling health nut, anyway...LOL) He told me the foods we choose to the environment we live could prove more harmful than a few glasses of wine. Chemicals are all around us.
Good luck!

I sometimes do have a bad idea myself.
I ended up in the hospital with pancreatitis due to drinking with hep-c.
That is how I found out that I had the virus.
Pancreatitis is life threatening and can also be quite painful.
I avoid alcohol but then again I am prescribed oxycodone and valium and I use them both.
I often wonder if that is also a bad idea.
People are usually very against what they are most likely to do themselves. Each and everyone of us enjoy or enjoyed drinking at some point in our lives, probably were loathe to give it up, but when push came to shove, sounds like most of us did when it meant getting rid of this crap.
You asked for opinions, and several of us replyed. We gave you answers to what we thought or did, what we were told, and examples of choices we made for ourselves.
The bottom line is what YOU think Larry. Do you have a problem drinking?
I'll tell you right now that I did. I told you the story of my brother in law. I went to see him for the last time a few hours before he passed. It was a very tramatic thing to witness. Do you think I stopped drinking that day, even that week? Not a chance. It took me another 4 years to finally quit and what did it was the black outs. The not knowing if I did anything stupid the night before, or better yet, just how stupid was I? Hell I don't know.....I couldn't remember last night for the most part......just maybe the first 1/2 bottle of wine, then after that everything was a blur. I found out that I called people and they would say " You don't remember calling me last night do you?" I would be mortified! Because they were right, I didn't remember talking to them at all. I quit 20 years ago.
Each of us here, are flung all over the US and beyond, but I know that if we lived closer together, close to you, we would all gather up and as Joe said "Stage an intervention for you." So don't think that we don't care and are putting you down. It's because we DO care and are trying to talk some sense into you befre you start your treatment. We've been there, done that, and made it out through to the other side.
I had a poem once stuck up on my fridge while I was quitting drinking. It was about alcohol being a mistress. I moved and lost it, and never found it again. Anyone here know the poem I'm talking about? I would sure like to find it again.
So Larry, I'm sure there is probably a group for those quitting alcohol on DS, and as always we're here for you too. Probably lots of good advice right here in this room about quitting drinking, but ya know, the one main ingrediant that you have to have...is YOU have to want to quit.
Take care,
Kelly

I have been around Hep C for over 15 years.............been on tons of Hep C boards, talked to many folks with Hep C......and know a LOT of heppers that drink. Its a decision YOU have to make and live with.................and asking folks on a Hep C board if its OK is only gonna get you negative replies...............cause those that do drink aren't gonna tell ya and those that don't are gonna ream ya.
So.....decide what is best for YOU, based on the facts you have.....and make that decision.......................its entirely up to you:):)
I would never ostracize you for having a beer...............you're an adult........you decide:):)
Me.......I'm smoking another cigarette...................while I cough my lungs out:):)
Its all good:):).........It is what it is:)
I made earlier posts about missing drinkin and how it was a huge loss for me re: social activities a it comes up often in my professional and personal life and I'm still a relatively young social adult who enjoys fine food and spirits. Alcohol was not received well here for myriad reasons and most were unsupportive of that. Heavy drinking is not good though with the virus or on treatment I've read much from reputable sources.
