This seems odd to me. If the results are less than 43, that would be considered un detectible. Using a more accurate test, the results would still be less than whatever number the test was accurate to, for example, my last test at one year post was less than 12, but has I been given the older test, I would have been less than 43.

Dave, if you finished treatment and were undetectable with a test sensitive to 43, all you know is that you have less than 43. you might have had a viral load of 25, but the technology wasn't sensitive enough to know it

The test given at post 6 months or 12 months doesn't need to be as sensitive. If you had 25 on the day you completed (and were undie), in the next 6 months without tx the 25 would have replicated to thousands or millions and be detected on any test

i think the issue is that we all view 43 as the magic undetectable number, when it is just a reflection of the quality of the test. in 1998 the test could only measure to 2000, and anything under 2000 was undie. Today, the tests go lower, so the definition of undie is lower

whatever the sensitiivity of the end of tx test is, the real test of svr is whether the little bastards replicated during their 6 months of no drugs. my understanding is that they'll either zoom up, or they are dead. in 6 months you don't have to worry that they grew from 7 to 42 and therefore having a very sensitive test matters at all, since they will grow hugely if you ended treatment with any viral load

I would retest, just to be sure. I know one person, who had this happen, but retested and was Undie.

There's still some hope there...I was "detectable but not quantifiable" (VL of less than 25) at Week 8, and still successfully completed 24 weeks.
It used to be that ANY level of detectable virus was a treatment failure, but now many docs consider a VL that is too low for the test to count to be equal to UND...

I think there is reason to be very hopeful.

The sensitive part, TMA or also known as heptimax test, was marked "misc" results not in, and she didn't put 2+2 together.
It should be in by Fri with, hopefully a better outcome.
I hope I just jumped the gun.
She is sending me for a immunofixation test, again I don't know the reason.
her nurse didn't know.
I also had a cryoglobulin test yesterday per my request. I let you know results asap..........thanks everybody......Beth

That is terrible news. I'm sorry, 48 weeks is tough and expensive. They say there is about a 5% chance of it returning. Most people clear at 4 weeks. There are two reasons they consider that could be factors in being part of the 5%.
First, when you are taking the protease inhibitor, you have to take it correctly. The secong would be after the protease inhibitors, you accidently somehow reinfect yourself. That would be hard to do, but it is possible.
No matter the reason, they are still working on better drugs that may suit you better and the TX may be easier for you. Just take a little break before you decide what to do. You deserve a break and it would be better for your health.

Sounds to me like you really don't have full information yet. Hang in there and shame of the medical staff for creating a panic. Hoping and praying that this is actually an undetectable result. I believe that under 43 is undetectable in some of the lab tests that are only sensitive to measure down to 43 replications of the virus.

TMA is LabCorp equivalent to Quest's Heptimax.

So sorry this has happened to you Bethann. Maybe it will not go any higher.

You could be anywhere from 5 to 42 IU/ml . Maybe the detectable but < 43 just sounds worse than it is.

Sorry, it looks like the TMA portion of the assay IS the Heptimax test.

LabCorp's limit used to be > = 43 to quantify. It can detect down to 5 or 7 IU/mL but it can't tell you the exact number < 43.

Anywho, I hope you pass the test with flying colors!

TMA in Centra Texas gets sent to Mayo in MN.
It is the most sensitive test available at present.
Target not detected is less than 5.

Since summer 2011, the "43" is **no longer ** considered not detectable VL in any form of hcv tx.
