As for specs, I am gonna be running an i5 processor quadcore so that and maxing out my RAM over time I don't think I'll have any issues with it bogging down. I am just gonna be running Chrome, iTunes, Steam and Skype, along with a Skype recorder for when me and my friends record our podcast. Plus it is a custom build, so I won't be having all the preloaded shit on there bogging it down.

Funny, I actually have the same issues with many windoze computers. They keep moving crap around. Ubuntu doesn't change much, once you learn the basic system, you know it. the software is all written by people who actually USE IT, so no "for no other reason than to have a new release" changes.

My system at home bogs, but that is more a function of the SSD and the shared video memory than anything else. I was only going for an entertainment center, and for that, it rocks. Build a computer in it's entirety for less than $200, what are you going to expect?

Not only is the UI for Windows 8 tablet oriented for the most part, but I hear not many developers have made software for it. So good luck with getting shit to work on it. Someone I know on YouTube had trouble getting his mic to work on it and it was a plug n play type of mic. So yeah, I won't be buying Windows 8 for my demon.

200 for a computer? lol... mine total is gonna run me $600-$800 depending on if I wanna max my RAM. This isn't including the OS. So yeah, 200? You get what you pay for. Dunno what processor you had and what PSU you had either. But 200? I am laughing maniacally on the inside at the thought. Mine again is a quadcore i5 and the PSU is gonna be 1000W.

As for shuddering at OS X, it's a good OS for what I like, simple and easy to use. And it doesn't run anything you don't want it to run on startup. Unless you specify otherwise, only Finder runs on it when it boots. As for me going Windows 7, I am only going that route because not many people have developed for 8 aside from me hating its UI, and I need something for gaming and Windows was made for gaming over OS X or Linux. If it wasn't for gaming and streaming to Twitch, I'd be building a hackintosh.

Windows 8 can kiss my ass, along with all the latest Office products. Just give me XP or 7 with Office 2002 and life is good.

I forget the processor, other than it is a dual core. It was the ultra low power one. The whole box burns about 18watts full blow and something like 4 when not doing anything. It's wired to a 32 inch LCD which is my only TV type thing. Ram was pretty low.. I think 2 gig?

Zotec Zbox? I think was the platform.. pretty little blue box bolted to the wall behind the monitor.

And it's only a 64gig SSD, but I've got a TB NAS on the network.

Doesn't matter much right now, everything is shut down till December, when I'm hoping to have money to get cable set back up.

Dave, have you thought about getting Internet on the go hotspot or equal? You buy the box then you can pay as you go.. They have them at Walmart and target..
