Will just basic texting and calling be enough?

Background- My boyfriend (34M) and I (30F) started dating in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We dated for 4.5 months before I moved back to Sri Lanka. Although it was a short relationship, we both felt very deeply for eachother so we decided to atleast try to make it work long distance. Now the total duration of our relationship is 6 months. We text everyday and skype call (sometimes video, sometimes audio) about twice a week.
Question- I have been reading up on articles about how to make LDRs work and many of them have really good advice and suggestions to keep the spark (send eachother actual letters, play online games, send little gifts, watch movies and tv shows together etc). My question is this, as great as all these suggestions are, just reading them makes me feel exhausted. At the same time, I'm fretting that if we don't do these things and just stick to phone calls and texts only, our relationship will get boring and wither away. Someone who has been in a LDR for a substantial amount of time please give me some advice based on personal experience. Do you really do all these things to keep the spark alive? Is just basic calling and texting sufficient? Please tell me your story. Thank you in advance.

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
I was in a long distance relationship for a couple of years. This was many years ago, before texting and the internet so we didn't have a whole lot of communication options. We wrote letters every couple of weeks, we talked to each other a few times a week, and at least one of those calls would be for an hour or more, with no distractions. We would also send little cards and gifts to each other all the time, like he'd make a batch of cookies and send them to me (how did I let that one get away, right??) or I'd make him a gift, like a drawing or a painting and send it to him.
We were very serious and very much in love with each other and so to me, there was no one else I really wanted to give my time to. If I knew he was calling me on a Thursday night, I made sure I was home on a Thursday night.
Here's the thing: with any kind of relationship, you have to put in effort to sustain it and to strengthen it. In my opinion, text message are not an effective means of communicating with someone on a personal and emotional level. But I do think if this works for you guys, then who's to say it's not enough.
My fear was (is?) 2 fold:
1) Not doing the extraneous stuff and just coasting along with out twice a week phone calls...what if it results in us growing distant over time without realising it, and by the time we do realise it, what if it's too late...
2) On the other hand, I don't like the idea of forcing myself or him to DO the extra stuff because it'll exhaust us and make us feel like the relationship is a burden instead of a joy like it is now
As to how we plan on closing the distance eventually, we discussed that if we are still going strong in 2 years, we would get married and I would move :) We both do love each other very much despite the fact that the relationship isn't all that long (6 months). This is the best relationship we've both had and the connection that we have is something very special for both of us.
