I'm a woman and I'd feel suffocated by daily contact, especially nonstop texting and 4 hour conversations. I don't think this is a 'guy' thing. I don't know if he lost his phone or not, but give the guy some oxygen or he'll probably want to run for good.
In my case, he was just playing with me.. but I cannot tell you it's the same with you. Maybe he is just busy and cannot be contacting you very often.. just give it a little time and try to figure out his true and real intentions..
In the end I think that, when you really like someone and want to be in touch, you find a day to do it, even if you lost your phone, had internet problems, etc.. there is always a way...
If he does this and then stops, that is a red flag that 1) he was not as interested as his behavior showed (a sign of emotional immaturity in my view); 2)he was interested but is not anymore (a sign of emotional issues like impulsivity and lack of care for other people's feelings); 3)he was and is interested but he does not want a serious relationship with anyone right now, so he's withdrawing.
Whatever the reason, be thankful it happened this early before you got more attached and more hurt.
As a general rule, if you have to worry and wonder and question yourself and his morals/motives, it is not a good sign. The best response is to take a step back and detach yourself. Don't contact the person. Let him show you with his actions if he deserves your affection. If he doesn't or does inconsistently--run away--fast!
Hope you get over this soon and find a guy that deserves you!
