I saw someone on television that said something interesting. They were talking about relationship and mention how emotionally unhealthy people attract other unhealthy people. While healthy people attract other healthy people.
I always knew an emotionally unhealthy person would be more likely to attract an unhealthy relationship, but his statement sounded like it was a foregone conclusion.
It made me wonder is it just better to remain single if you are emotionally unhealthy? I've always told myself I would like to remain single until I am in a better place, but sometimes I feel so alone and wonder if I am just making excuses because I am scared. Yet this statement makes me think I really would be better off single until I am more healthy.
The other thing it made me think of is how I usually attract unappealing guys. The guys who take an interest in me tend to come across as creeps or weirdos. Granted, I don't socialize much so I don't have the opportunity to meet that many men in general. But it made me wonder if this is a case of unhealthy attracting unhealthy?
I would like to hear other's thoughts on this topic.

Many of you know Mr K told me to "shut your mouth" in March 2025 when we took a road trip to Alpena Michigan. Since that time, we have had lots of ups and downs but I have never intentionally hurt Mr K in anyway. And when we first started dating in 2024 he let me know, although he is an engineer by degree, he has an extremely low EQ. Overall, he is ok (not off the charts nice like other guys in...

Kbbcoop, thank you for sharing. I wish you the best. It makes me realize I definitely need to be healed from my issues.
Koolman, that is true. I am doing the work, but I think I have a long way to go.
i know that at harder points in my life, times when i felt weak, lonely, or down on myself already, it was harder for me to do the right thing and walk away if an unhealthy person approached me. when i look back, there have always been unhealthy people that have tried to come into my life, but i was not so good at resisting their influence when i was at a low point already, if that makes any sense. it was much easier to assert myself and draw healthy boundaries when i already felt strong and confident.
I think a healthy person is a good judge of knowing when to leave immediately, give it a little time, or it is worth some more efforts but not to the point that it is hurting yourself.
The other thing is there are some very manipulative people out there too who know how to turn on the charm & will only show their true self after they have you in marriage or after children..when it is so much harder to leave.
then there are some who are over cautious with red flags due to never wanting to be in a bad situation again.
I try to listen to my gut eventhough there may be some very good things on the surface. Is the person extremely stubborn in their thoughts and ways or really wants to understand & compromise is something I look for also. Everyone knows that everyone is not perfect but it is true that some are much worse than others.
We need to set aside prejudice in order to look into the hearts and minds of the people that we meet. It doesn't make sense to lump all 'unhealthy' people together, whether we are talking about emotional, psychological, or physical illness.
For some kinds of mental issues, the prevailing dynamic is "opposites attract" for example, the dependent with the controlling, or those who are perpetually needy (e.g addicts) with those who need to be needed (e.g. codependents). Introverts and extroverts, on the other hand, tend to avoid each other. Narcissists and sociopaths target those who are overtly successful yet secretly lonely and yearning for unconditional love. The strategy of an abuser to isolate their victim, by using emotional outbursts and lies, should ring alarm bells as soon as it starts happening.
The more people we get to know, the more likely it is that we will come into contact with people who are good for us, and the easier ti will be to get free of the ones who aren't.
blessuall and carterbrautigan - your comments were very insightful, and I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Speaks to me.
happymamaj2 - You gave me a lot to think about. I have turned down all of the wrong people so far so maybe I am healthier than I think, but I am terrified of the thought of ending up in a relationship with someone that ends up being all wrong and I can't bring myself to leave.
carterbrautigan - Thank you for your thoughts. I do want to clarify that I don't mean to lump in all unhealthy people together. I use the word unhealthy to mean someone who would make a relationship unhealthy such as an abuser or someone controlling. I won't discount someone just for being physically or mentally ill.
freetochoose: Yes!!! Boundaries! That's how we maintain our own health and sanity around people who are no good for us and just drag us down into their abyss as we try to keep ourselves out of our own abyss.
