Back in July, I was in a really serious car crash that almost killed me. My car flipped on the interstate at 70mph. Ever since then, my mother will not give me any space. I'm pushing 30 years old and don't live with her, but she is trying to keep neverending tabs on me. If I mention that I want to schedule a dentist appoint, she will text me nonstop to ask if I have done so yet. If it's Friday night and I tell her that I'm out...she tries to find out with whom, where, how I got there, etc. If my boyfriend is in town, she texts all day to see what our plans are.
It's not that I don't see or spend time with her, I go to their house every week for a family dinner. This has gotten to the point that it's damaging my relationship with her. I don't want her to know anything about me or tell her any stories anymore. I've tried to talk to her about it, but she just made a joke about being a "meddlesome mom" and brushed me off. Last week she started in on me again and I snapped. I yelled at her and told that if she wanted to maintain a relationship with her daughter, she needed to back off. Now she won't speak to me, period. This goes above and beyond "how was your day, sweetie"...it's invasive and controlling.
I've always been close to my mom and don't want to see the relationship suffer, but I don't know how to handle this anymore :(

Hey All...I hope that you have a lovely, peaceful beginning of your weekI have a bunch of chores that need doing but may put them off til tomorrow and just hang out with my landlord/roomie todayWhat about you?...Anything special going on?Have a great day and take good care of you!!..Xo

Let her know that you value your relationship with her, but you are an adult (regardless of your accident) and would like to be treated as such.
Thank goodness you are okay. I hope everything gets resolved quickly for you.
I went through a similar experience with my husband, after a life threatening situation nearly killed me. After I was home and trying to just get my own head around how freakin' scary it is to almost have died, my husband was very over protective, wanting to drive me everywhere, wanting to know when I was leaving work, where I was going etc. It drove me nuts and our relationship really was a struggled during that time.
Finally at some point, I grasped that when you're going through a trauma, so is everyone else around you, and in some ways it's worse for them than for you because they feel absolutely helpless and useless. And so the only way not to is to try to take control. It took a conversation with my husband, like the one I recommend you have with your mom, when he was relaxed and had his guard down a bit. He said, you have no idea what it does to you to watch the person you love being worked on by EMTs, loaded into an ambulance and rushed to the hospital, watching docs in the ER working on you, and then seeing you in the ICU hooked up to machines, everyone telling you how lucky it is that you are alive. He said whenever I left the house, he was afraid it was the last time he'd ever see me. I had no idea he was so troubled by things and I think once he was able to articulate it, rather than acting it out by being controlling and hovering over me, he sort of was able to relax finally.
I don't know. It's ok to be firm with your mom, but do it with kindness, and make sure you hear her.
Glad you're ok!
If she needs some time to get over the tiff give it to her...don't let this be a manipulation to go back to more for the same...xo
