Ok. I've been with him for almost three years. Six months in, I admittedly twisted his arm to come to a wedding with me instead of his friend's giant Halloween party. The party was a really big deal to him and there were a lot of friends there that he hasn't seen since.
On the other hand, the wedding was very important to me because I have a large Italian family that would have reacted extremely harshly if he let me go alone. I felt that if my family saw him in a bad light, then they would make the relationship difficult for me (past experiences have taught me this).
Fast forward to today. He has a vending business that I help with on some weekends. We are supposed to work this weekend, but my father's family meets on Palm Sunday every year and then an old friend called out of the blue saying that he was throwing a mutual friend a surprise birthday on Saturday.
Now, when I brought these things up to my boyfriend, I wasn't going to go, HE is the one that said, Oh, no problem hun, I find someone to cover for you. And I say no, I'll be there. I'm bummed, obviously, but I'll be there for you.
Then when I asked if he found someone to cover for me, he says no, but it doesn't matter and he'll do it himself. I obviously said, that wasn't acceptable and that I'll cancel with my family and friends, no problem.
And suddenly, me working was unacceptable to him! He was yelling at me to just go and that he didn't want me there. THEN he starts in with the snark, talking about "I'm not making you go to a wedding" and "it's not like you'll never see your friends again"
And even though I was willing to cancel on my family and friends BEFORE all of this, (and I'm still willing) he's yelling at me to get out and not to come this weekend.
I called him a manipulative asshole and now I'm here. Talking to the internet because I don't have any close friends and my family will never let it go if I call them and complain...you know the old adage, Never complain to your family about your spouse, you'll forgive him tomorrow, but your family never will.
So...there it is. I feel manipulated, like I'm supposed to keep feeling guilty for making him go to a wedding almost two years ago. He doesn't do this with anything else, but we always fight if I want to go to a family thing and doubly so if he should go too. And things explode if there is a conflict with his business.
I just wish he would let go of this grudge against me. It's a huge strain that takes days to get out of. Am I idiotic for dealing with it? And he just won't talk about it...we are at an impasse. He won't forgive me for making him go to the wedding and he keeps bringing it up during fights.
Thanks for listening.

Look at what my best friend did with my picture!

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
There's a way to work things out but living in the past is not the way
Have you actually been through something serious together like illnesses, deaths in the family, catastrophic losses and how was that handled?
Her: I have a family function to attend this weekend and I can't work with you.
Him: "Oh, no problem hun, I find someone to cover for you."
Her: No, I'll be there for you. (in your best martyrdom manner)
Later...
Her: did you find someone to cover for me? (this after you basically said "you don't need to find someone else, I'll be there to work")
Him: No, but don't worry, I'll do it myself.
And HE's the manipulative one???
You sound very passive-aggressive in nature. Maybe that is the relationship problem...
Not saying that their never were any fights but we tried to work them out together. We didn't end the conversation until we new it was over because I am a deep thinker and I don't like words left unspoken.
The fact you kinda work with him brings complications. Maybe he just enjoys your company and is upset you aren't going to go with him, that you'd rather be with them. It kinda sounds like that to me.
Maybe you should think about how important he actually is to you if you're thinking about ending things.
Maybe you should talk to him and address what's going on and demand that you talk about it. That's if you feel like being in this relationship.
Thanks for all your comments so far. I really needed an outside perspective on this.
He doesn't have any family at all. His parents have passed and he doesn't talk to his brother. At the beginning of our relationship, I did have a lot of family attachments. Now I barely have any. I see my father every few weeks...that's about the extent of it, and my boyfriend doesn't come with me.
And Texi, thanks for pointing out that martyrdom attitude I had, you were perfectly right, that was in my heart. But it's not unreasonable for me to ask if he found someone to cover for me. If he hadn't, then I would have canceled my plans and went to work, no problem, no grudge.
My problem is we went from making sure that he could run his business well and efficiently this weekend, to the fact that I made him go to a wedding two years ago.
I'm not trying to eliminate my blame in this. But he IS being manipulative. I just want him to let go of this stupid wedding thing.
Yes, he needs to let go of the wedding thing, but you need to understand why he is upset and I think you don't. Maybe he is jealous that you have so many relatives and if it is true, he needs to address this as well.
BOTH you and him seem to have let outside relationships slide. Him and his friends (his surrogate family) and you and your family.
Perhaps both of you are frustrated with your choices?
Totally validate him. Look him in the eyes, grab his face between your hands and say... " I know you did that for me snookums" "I am the luckiest woman on this planet to have such a giving, selfless, generous MAN" lol.... That should stop him in his tracks.
I am one who brings up every single past hurt during arguments... not a good trait for sure! but it's no big deal if the core of your relationship is solid and you both want the same things and you're there for each other and you enjoy your life together.
The real source of you angst is probably your guilty conscience. When he first offered to find someone else to help him you should have said "ok" once and then never brought it up again, but by hemming and hawing.. and bringing it up to reassure yourself, it irked him and it turned into this...Now no matter what path you take.. going to your Dad's and friends or staying to work with him... it will be awkward because it's turned into a big deal.
I find when that happens, I try to not even get mad about the fact that it's coming up again. But after things have cooled down between us and we are BOTH calm and rational, that's when I say something like, "Can you find a way to forgive me or understand that I appreciate all you do for me and for us so we can put it behind us?" Ultimately, while I've moved on a while ago, clearly my husband hasn't and I sometimes feel like it's my job to help him get him there. I mean, I don't need to be the one who's right at a certain point. It's more important for me to just truly get it behind us.
Aronia, it could be very that he's jealous, or at least uncomfortable with my relatives because he doesn't have experience with big families like that.
Patti, we are victims of circumstance in the fact that we have few friends. we both lost all our friends in supremely awkward breakups before we found each other. We both tell each other "you need more friends"...actually, that's quite the rabbit hole now that I think about it, perhaps a topic for another forum post.
Rmb, I have said something similar, and he just makes it clear (in sort of calm conversation) that he is still livid about the incident. I have no idea what else to do because even though I feel guilty that I'm responsible for the whole situation, I stand by my choice. We would not be together at all if he had bailed on me at that critical time in our relationship. I know that sounds completely cracked, but it is the truth as I know it.
Anyway, thanks again everyone, for your comments. You guys and gals are a great help.
