There are groups like MeetUp's that get together for many things like dances, coffee and conversation, bowling almost anything that you can think of
Volunteer work is a good way to me new people as well..... Good for you for wanting to get back out there.... It can be hard when you've be isolating
One step at a time is good..... If you are feeling uncomfortable about a lot of conversation at first maybe look at MeetUp's for things like movies
Maybe call someone you haven’t talked to in a while, and just say, I’ve been thinking about you and hope we can get together sometime. If they want to great. If not, that their thing not yours. Move on. If that feels awkward, then just start somewhere, like church, school, gym or anything, even a book club, just to get back in the habit of being around others. Then as you get more comfortable you will find it easier to make friends or engage others.
You are ok. You really are.
