Hello, this is going to be a semi-long post, but please bear with me. My boyfriend (20) broke up with me (19) last Saturday. It was completely out of the blue, we were together and happy every day. Every single person was shocked. He came over Saturday morning, and would hardly look at me, even when I made conversation. I had the vibe he was going to break up with me and I said, "Are you dumping me?" He said, "No. Yes. No. Dumping is a harsh term, we're breaking up." I bawled and bawled into his arm and begged him to not leave me. He said that he needs to focus on himself, and that if he isn't ready to give himself to someone, he shouldn't be in a relationship. When I pleaded him to stay, he'd say, "Please stop pleading. Stop bartering." I told him I didn't want to lose him, and he said "You don't have a choice. I don't have a choice." He said that we weren't friends long enough before we dated, and that we went too fast. After about five minutes, he said, "The time for this has passed. You need to let go of me." He'd unwrap my arm from his and tilt my head off of him every time I tried to hold him. When he was leaving, I begged for a hug and we hugged for a while. He kept saying, "I have to go." He went downstairs, said goodbye to my dad and shook his hand, and left. That was the last time I saw or spoke to him.
Now, here's some other details to let you know what kind of person he is. He's truly a good person, incredibly intellectual and kind. He's got terrible, terrible depression that gets worse in the winter. In the past, he's just disappeared from his friends' lives. He's still in love with his ex girlfriend. She and her now boyfriend bought a house and pets together, she doesn't like him at all anymore. It's been a while since they've even talked, and she gave him horrible commitment issues. We only dated a little more than four months, but we also spent almost every single day together. One night, he said I should spend the night at my house, so that we don't become dependent on each other, and that I should leave at nine. Nine came, he asked me to stay until ten. Ten came, he said "fuck it, we'll be dependent." A couple weeks ago, he said that he wanted to keep me around, and that I was more than enough for him.
We have a mutal best friend, he's the one that introduced us. The day my ex broke up with me, he was at our best friend's place. He said that my ex was being very weird. He was hardly talking, and just staring at the ground. He told me that this may very well be something involving his seasonal depression, and that my ex had told him that I was his best friend.
Now, here's where I need your help. This weekend, I want to go grab the rest of my things from his house and speak to him. I want to explain to him that I am here for him, and that I don't want to lose him. I want to tell him that we can slow things down and that we don't have to spend every day together. Relationships are hard, and take work and I don't want him to just give up. I don't really know what I should and should not say to him to get him back, so can you guys help me please? I'm a wreck.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

It definitely sounds like his behavior could be related to his own personal mental health. I too tend to shut down. Since I am in a similar mindset right now, if I was him, I would probably just want to hear that you’d be there when I was ready to talk, and that you weren’t giving up on me. If you have to resort to begging though, I would be there for him as a friend but realize relationship wise you deserve better.
One thing that I find a little disturbing in so far as him making a commitment to anyone is that he still is in love with his ex
I hope that he's getting treated for depression
Gentle hug.... I know that it's hard.....xo
It is possible that he sees how much you love him and he just doesn’t feel the same way.
When a man truly loves you, he doesn’t want to let you go.
Maybe he loved the sex and enjoyed your companionship, but then realized that he is just using you and not giving you want you deserve .
