Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
So I've been taking pantoprazole twice a day at 40mg for about 2.5 weeks. Was feeling ok so I decided to try cutting my doseage to once in the morning. Woke up the next day with more burning in my stomach and chest. Tried last night to do 20mg at night with my usual morning dose, and woke up again today with the same burning.
Ive been sleeping on a wedge for a few days, and usually don't get acid reflux. Should I go back to 40mg twice a day or try staying on 40mg and then 20mg at night?
im also taking Amitriptyline st night as well.

Hi, I kinda tried to do the same thing with my dosages of PPI .... if dosing down gives you bad side effects then stay at your dose. Your body will let you know if you need the PPI or not. I went from a heavy dose (60MG) of Dexilant to a smaller one 30mg and eventually to OTC Nexium. At the moment I am only taking prevacid twice a day or when the acid reflux starts to act up. I still sleep on a wedge and I am on my last round of Amitryp.

This is crazy. I only decreased my dose by 20mg at night and I'm having the worst burning in my stomach.

When I reduced from every day 40mg to every other day 40 mg, I also had reflux and coughing for one day, not really any burning. But they went away the next day. My doctor told me to stop taking them, So I go 20mg every every other day and then go cold turkey. I hope I'll survive :D

I'm still taking my 40mg in the morning, and then 20mg at night instead of another 40. Why is my stomach burning so much???!!??

That's really strange, since I think 40mg is enough to stop almost all acid production. As it sounds, maybe it is better you go again on 40mg at night and ask your doctor? Maybe it is not the time for your to wean off yet. If I experienced burning I wouldn't lower my dose. Are you sure it is not because of something you had eaten?

If getting back to 40mg at night fixes it then It would be reasonable to stick to it for a while longer I guess. Or maybe this is a rebound period which will pass at some time, I have no experience my self with rebound though. I have gone cold turkey with PPIs before and nothing has happened except a little coughing here and there, nothing major. But some people have major burning and pain when they wean off suddenly. Weaning off gradually shouldn't be that bad though. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon.

I've had the same experience only I'm only 20mg in the morning & 300mg of Rantidine at night. I skipped the PPI one morning and by the evening had the worst burning pain in my gut, even had an ambulance out. It could be rebound acid aggravating the already sore area of gastritis

These PPI's are very difficult to stop.ive taken one for almost 20 years and everytime I stop,my stomach symptoms return with a vengence.Taking protinix(pantoprazole) at bedtime.i can skip an occasional day but cant make it past day 3 or I'mm have acid roll up into my chest area while I'm asleep.i even aspirated it one night.That was so scarey because i couldnt breathe!

I notice some people are taking amitriptyline.Is that for acid or gastritis? I tried it once a long time ago for headaches and depression and it made my blood pressure go dangerously high so I had to stop it.
