Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

I have been doing some very interesting reading lately about the different ways H pylori can affect the stomach & how if it affects your lower stomach you can get increased acid production because it affects certain cells & this is why it can burn through to the small intestine & cause a duodenal ulcer or duodenitis (which I have).
However if H pylori affects higher up in the stomach then it can cause a different type of gastritis where low stomach acid is the problem because of the cells affected.
Anyway whilst doing this reading I found some VERY INTERESTING FACTS about what can control stomach acid production & we might be able to use this to our advantage!
The most useful one is as follows....
*********************************************
Presence of Fat or Oil in the duodenum (small intestine) can reduce gastric acid production in the stomach. This is a scientific fact.

I did a bit more searching on this topic & found some studies had been done on this which found using oils containing Oleic acid are really effective at this....
Olive oil & avocados are excellent sources of oleic acid. The more I read about this, the more I kept coming across traditional remedies like having a dessert spoonful of olive oil 30 minutes before a meal to reduce excess stomach acid.
Anyway to cut a long story short... I have been trying this for the last 2 days & have noticed an unbelievable difference.
Since coming off my ppi 10 days ago, I'd been in a bit of a state & having to have masses of ranitidine & gaviscon etc to control my acid during the day. This was even with taking my herbs etc. Whereas with taking the olive oil before meals I'm not having to take any antacids in the day, although I'm still taking my 300mg ranitidine at bedtime.
Perhaps this is a coincidence. Perhaps tomorrow I'll be back here writing about being in pain! But perhaps, just perhaps I'm onto something that really works for me!!!
The olive oil has other advantages too like it coats the lining to protect from acid & also it is an anti-inflammatory!
Luckily my stomach can handle olive oil at this time. I know it couldn't a few months ago.
Anyway I thought I'd share this!

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
After reading this I thought it was worth a shot as the back pain was almost certainly inflammation related and it may relive this a little while adjusting to no PPi. Well strange as it sounds and amazed as I am I have been taking one spoon first thing when i wake up and another 2 before meals and I have had NO back pain for 2 weeks and have only needed to take 300mg zantac before bed to relieve GERD in the night. Within 2 days of stopping the nexium all of my aches and fatigue were gone and I feel dare I say it fit and strong. I hope this continues as GERD I can cope with via diet and Zantac. However nexium is just a nightmare for me.
The olive oil is definitely still helping me too. I used to get a lot of pain before my evening meal (30% of gastric acid is secreted in anticipation of eating), but this has massively reduced (almost disappeared) since starting the olive oil.
How many spoonfuls a day do you take? Do you take 1 or 2 spoonfuls before meals.
Interesting from Wikipedia.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastric_acid
There are three phases in the secretion of gastric acid:
1. The cephalic phase: Thirty percent of the total gastric acid secretions to be produced is stimulated by anticipation of eating and the smell or taste of food.
2. The gastric phase: Sixty percent of the acid secreted is stimulated by the distention of the stomach with food. Plus, digestion produces proteins, which causes even more gastrin production.
3. The intestinal phase: The remaining 10% of acid is secreted when chyme enters the small intestine, and is stimulated by small intestine distention
I also think that this is because i felt overconfident in eating and pushed it too far in what I ate over the last weekend.
I am thinking that it is very effective at reducing inflammation for me, whether this is by reducing acid production or just lining the stomach i am not sure. I am sure that I will be able to keep off the PPi if i dont get to cocky with what i eat and keep up the oil and that is the most important thing for me at the moment.
Thanks
Maybe I'll try adding a teaspoon of olive oil to a meal and see what happens
I think the Nexium is making me feel worse than the gastritis at this point. I want off the PPI's.
Let me know if you try it. My olive oil DIDNT taste bad. I know you can't buy a cheap one and get good flavor. I married into an Italian family. They know olive oil, lol.
I know what u mean about tired of the digestive issues, I can't even remember what it feels like to be normal, though over the last few months I've had periods of feeling well enough to go to the gym again but something keeps happening to send me back to square one e.
