Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
I am Insurance paid. Luckily my deductible has been met for this year and I will have to pay 15% of total after that. Right now I am at 235
and my goal for myself is 135. However, I think my Dr's goal is more like 150. LOL I am an older fart too so we will see what my body has in store for me.
I made the decision to do this in Aprl, 2012. In the last year I have developed high blood pressure and a rise in blood sugars. Diagnosed with HYPNOapnea so I've been on an automated cpap machine for 2 weeks at night. Not crazy about it.
I have thyroid disease (genetics) going against me and cant exercise like everyone else because of a rod and screws in my back. You'd never know it to look at me, thank the Lord! Im very active, just limited in what I can do in the form of exercising.
Drs set a weight of 180 for me with my large bone frame but I'm getting that to 165. Currently sitting at 265..5 ft 7. I'm a fiesty young 55 and looking not to follow in my mothers footsteps as It appears I am developing all her health issues. Health is my priority here. My mother passed from a stroke. Heart issues.
As for costs, I can only imagine. Lots of tests( upper GI, etc.) and blood work already. The 2 sleep studies alone and the follow ups with neurologists arent cheap. Approx costs set at 18,000 t0 35,000.
Im very thankful to God for my over all good health minus the "chubs" grins and the insurance companies for giving me this chance to right all my wrongs!!! Thanks to you all for insight I have picked up in just a day. I wish each of you nothing but good things!!
If I had a chest reduction, I'd only have 40 lbs to lose...ha ha
Dr. Joseph Moran, RNY 4/11/2012
50 lbs gone in 8 weeks, 50 to go (half way!!!)
Off blood pressure meds and thyroid meds are stable
Dehydrated on week 4 but no other complications; had to get 2 bags of fluid
Great after care by my surgeon and nutritionist; hospital & dr has support groups
Insurance paid 100% after deductible; paid $1200 out of pocket
Total hospital bill = $38,000 / Surgeon bill = $12,000
Would do it again in a heartbeat :-)
